i have a 66 mustang and would like to build up a 302 to put in it. i have a 91 ford f-250 5.0 engine and was wondering if it would work? does it have a place for a manual fuel pump?
you may have at least 2 issues. for a manual fuel pump you will need a timing cover from a 302 that was carbed. that will solve part of the other problem which is a reverse rotation water pump and serpentine belt on the truck engine , otherwise no problem.Check when you have the cover off to see that the cam has a eccentric for the fuel pump.
Your also going to need to get your flexplate/flywheel rebalanced to the newer 50oz imbalance. Same with your damper if you use the old one. Do you currently run a 289? The front cover might not fit the 302 but I'm not sure.
The front cover will fit but you will have to use the dist from the older engine and of course the flex plate and damper from the new engine. Don't try and use the new reverse rotation water pump because the ports are opposite and it will not bolt up to the old timing cover without leaking and obviously it's made to run counterclockwise. The new dist has a longer shaft to provide more support and with the old dist from a durasparkII the oil pump drive just barely engages, you may be more comfortable with a longer oil pump driveshaft.I know of engines running with the old dist in newer engine and have heard of no failures but the oil pump drive only engages by about 1/2 in. and needs to be 3/4 in longer, a custom piece is required, a very high grade 1/4 in allen key with a long shaft can be made to work provided one can be found that is staright.
so it will work if i use my 289 timing cover, water pump and distributor? i plan to install a new cam and intake as well as a rebuild. a manual fuel pump will work if i use the 289 cover? i will also need my 289 damper? thanks
No, you need to use the damper from the 91 302. The old motors prior to 1981 were 28.2 oz imbalance dampers and flex plates, 1981 to currant use 50oz imbalance dampers and flexplates.
You could always go with an electric fuel pump made for older engines.
