Have a 15 year old 5K Generac and if I do not have a cardiac trying to start the darn thing within the next couple of days looking to replace. It is only used during power outage, some times not needed, and then there are the occasional winters where power is out for a day or two and up to 2-3 times thru the winter. Do not have anything negative to say about the Generac other than it can be major pain in the backside trying to start.
It comes to replacing, looking to stay within $600 to $800 for a generator that puts out around 6K to 7K watts. Checked local Costco who only carries the Champion, not familiar with. Amazon offers more selections; Generac, Westinghouse, Champion, and couple others, with basically same features and at around the same price. Considered the Champion duel fuel but would have to use a portable tank, and then, not sure it would be worth the additional $200.
Anyhow, thought I would check w/ members for comments and/or advice to help me out of this 'funk' attempting to find the better option?
i prefer the older Onan units. they are a bit on the noisy side, but very dependable units.
plus all parts needed are still available because they are american made.
it only cost $9 to do a complete tune up and replace exhaust manifold gasket on my 10KW unit that was made in 1959
although one day i would like to replace it with a diesel unit.
do you start the generator every 3 months...? .. you should.
have the carburetor rebuilt... make sure the fuel tank is clean...
if the engine has an spin on oil filter... keep it... fix it and use it...
I have a Generac GP7000E.... 6 years now... and yes.. it has a spin on oil filter.
Just got the generator running bout 1/2 hour ago, had I needed a couple more pulls on the start cord it may have been belly up. I do try and start the generator every once and a while. If it has been setting for any length of time I keep a clean spark plug onhand and it usually starts within a few pulls, with this recent attempt I gave up, let it set couple hours, then gave it another try. Intend changing the oil, read a review where it was recommended going to a synthetic multi grade oil during winter months, and no there's no oil filter to my knowledges? It does appear the engine is running rich, plugs appears black after use? I should be able to rebuild, have to check source for a rebuild kit; another alternative may be call local small engine repair shop for a quote to rebuild.
If I can go couple more years then intend going with generator that provides more juice, noticed Onan customer reviews highly favorable?
I do appreciated everyone's comments and suggestion, find it very helpful !!
I think you have carb issues. I doubt the engine needs to be rebuilt. Pull the carb off, take it apart and clean it up. I bet it starts right up after that.
Located my 14 year old owner's manual only to find it was an exercise in futility, no mention of the carb, either in the parts listing, or manual. Ran a search on 'Briggs and Stratton 10 hp engine carb replacement parts with no results. Intend remove carb, purchase gasket material and gingerly remove gasket to use as templates, don't imagine is should take more than couple hours?
The engine should have some numbers on it (Model, Type and Code), if it's an OHV the numbers should be on the valve cover. Post them up and we can likely find a carb kit for it.

The 'owner's manual' shows a P/N for the B.S. 10hp engine as 96301, but do not believe it's the information mentioned in you post. Intend checking the engine for the info. tomorrow early am. A quick browse and appears basic tune-up and carburetor replacement parts are available, imagine it will depend on the model number? Briggs and Stratton web site has a 'how to' rebuild the carb, not sure to what extend I am willing to disassemble?
Obtained the information needed and Briggs and Stratton emailed a copy of the operators manual and engine parts list. Again, I thank U's.
Having a discussion with myself as to whether to purchase the 'overhaul kit' for approx. $60, or replace with an updated carburetor for around $120. Checked e-replacement parts and they offer 3 variations of the 'overhaul' kit which appear to consist of needle seat, idle mixture screw, and few odds and ends. Since I am not sure how far I will disassemble the carburetor and would prefer not paying for items I do not use, curious if there is a basic item list that would cover a simple overhaul?? Anyhow, Comments, suggestions appreciated.
float, needle, gaskets, cleaner. and if your carb has a center bolt at the bottom of float bowl... check the center bolt, as it may have small holes... run a small wire thru them.. MUST BE CLEAR....

Located a replacement part source; they list the Carb. rebuild kit for around $10, I am currently comparing component with those items mentioned in your post to the Briggs and Stratton engine parts list, intend placing the order early early tomorrow a.m. Hope to have the project completed shortly after receiving the parts. Again, thank you!!
