ok looking to drop a 289, 302 (5.0L for new kids) or a 4.6L in my 96 ranger, what ones gonna be ceapest to get a hold of, build up, and keep running? and will i be able to mount eather of these motors to my stock rear end?
thanks for any help
The 5.0 would probably be your cheapest option as the 4.6 is an OHC motor, and is pretty expensive to build. The 5.0's have been in production for an extremely long time, so you should be able to pick up a good running motor at a junkyard for pretty cheap. I had a 5.0 in my '94 Mustang and parts were reasonable, and it was pretty easy to work on. Good luck.
A C4 is the easiest way to go and the cheapest. You won't have overdrive and it will be annoying on the highway if you go with any type of steep rear gear. You can put in an AOD if you want overdrive but they can be expensive to set up for abuse. If you are only looking for an around town kinda vehicle then the C4 is your best bet.
I am knee deep in this conversion myself. I am putting in a fuel injected 5.0 motor with AOD. I have found that it sounds pretty cheap on paper but you can get nickle and dimed to death.
Make sure you do your homework before starting this project. Among others, take a look at the sites provided by rockledge. There is alot of material out there.
Good luck!
