Has anyone here replaced them? My passenger side one is noisy at cold starts.
I found a how-to on an f150.
So, how much time do I have to change it before damage occurs?
Thanks.
Can phasers normally knock when warm. This might be something different. What oil filter are you running and does it have the anti drain back valve in it? How often have you idled the truck and what's your oil change intervals. Before we conclude it's the cam phaser, let's grab a mechanics stethoscope (short hose) and listen around the engine for the problem. Listen around the valve covers and the exhaust manifolds.
You could be looking at over $5k in work to fix this problem if you don't face it yourself.
What's the miles on the truck?
These trucks develop exhaust manifold issues and poor oil quality kills the overall life expectancy of them. If you've let the oil run 10,000 miles before a change, you may have ruined some rockers or lifters.
Have you pulled any codes or are you getting any lights in the cluster?
If you are in fact facing a cam phaser issue, the overall life you can expect out of the motor is safe a safe estimate at 10,000. Some self-destruct sooner, some 50,000 miles later. But the fact is, you shouldn't expect much from your truck until you fix it.
I did Phasers, solenoids, gaskets, oil pump, chains, tensioners, etc, all in my own garage for a total cost of $700. An estimated $5000+ in dealer talk. And the truck was brand new and quieter than I ever heard before.
Sorry took so long to respond.
150000 miles.
Average oil change at 5000.
Always 5w20.
It only knocks a few seconds at cold start. No noise after oil gets circulated.
It sounds like loose gear/pulley rattle, not really a valve train tick.
I am hoping to get a recording this week.
No engine codes.

That's my input
I need to replace some of those too on my 08 expedition is the do you know if the valve cover removal is the same and if so have you seen a step by step guide anywhere?

Valve cover removal on drivers side is pretty easy. Just remove everything that is over it. For the passenger side, you can either discharge the A/C system and remove it (budget a charge if you chose this route), or you can put a floor Jack under the engine and lift the passenger side a little to allow you to remove the valve cover.

Are you sure this isn't the timing chain tensioners?
Always used Motocraft filters. No reason to use other brands. The Moto's are dirt cheap online at at Walmart, etc.
For what it's worth. My expedition made the phaser sounds for most of the engines life starting at about 30,000 miles. I was told by the Ford dealership that was normal for this engine and there were no runability problems. He was correct but it got noiser over time. Then I started getting the starting rattle. It was annoying and only lasted for about 1-2 seconds on start up. Eventually the noise changed and started sound like a timing chain rattle on the case. I took it in to a local mechanic and they found both timing chain guides broken. Did a total timing chain kit and put it back together. It still had the start up rattle. The selonoids were changed and that fixed the start up rattle. Now I don't drive like a granny or a soccer mom with a vehicle full of kids. I some how broke the timing chain tensioner on the drivers side and pushed a piece through the valve cover. This time had both phasers timing chain kit and both selonoids replaced and it sounds better than new. The selonoids are problematic according to my mechanic. The phasers are just noisy. I drove it for over 100,000 miles with the noisy phasers with no problems.
