Engine break in question.

I am having my 302 in my Bronco replaced as I type this. Its a reman. Anybody have any tips or suggestions on how to properly break in this motor. I just want to make sure I do everything right to help the motor last as long as possible. Thanks in advance for any advice.

P.S. This should probably go in the oil section but is there a brand of oil that seems to work better on initial break in?

Engine break in question.

The important factor for any engine break-in is the cam. I like to prime the oil pump with an electric drill until a mechanical gauge show spressure or oil is being steadily pumped out of the push rods. Replace rocker arm covers, fire the engine and run at a steady 1500-2000rpm for 15-20 minutes. Shut down, change oil and filter, allow to cool down. Start, adjust timing/carb if applicable and drive it.

Modern rings seat with minutes or a few miles. Some people like to keep the rpms low and fluctuate rpms for the first 500 miles of driving, but I don't feel that's necessary. Race engines have no problems seating rings and all they get is a cam break-in period with flat tappet or solid roller lifters. Hydraulic rollers require no cam break-in period.

For initial start-up, I use a cheap 30 weight oil. First change a 10-40 dino oil and the same at 100 miles. Both of those oil changes are to remove any metal filings, etc. from the oil/filter that inevitably show up in a new engine. Then use whatever you like.

Engine break in question.

Question, I hope that the first paragraph of priming the pump and the initial "first running" should be done by the shop doing the work. Now, if I call them up and ask what they will do to for the initial start up and the say nothing, should I request that they do what you have stated. I spent a bunch of loot for this and I want it to go perfect.

actually I just called the guy doing the work and he told me that all I had to do is change the oil every 3000 miles after I get the truck back, no other kind of info. Should I take his word for it? He told me the place he gets the motors does the priming on the dyno testing. I just don't want to get screwed on this. I guess regardless of what he says, I will change the oil twice within 200-300 miles w/ 10-40 and after that put Havoline 10-30 in it. Does this sound ok? Thanks for your input.

Engine break in question.

Sounds like the cam break-in is being taken care of by the rebuilder.

10-40 dino oil is conventional 10-40 weight motor oil. Dino (for dinosaur) is often used in conversations about motor oil to separate it from synthetic oils such as Mobil 1.
