So I took the 6.0 down for smog here in CA and it failed. It showed EGR not "ready"
The EGR was just replaced recently since it was removed and had a delete on it. Is there anything I need to do so that it recognizes the EGR valve?
No tune that I know of? Just picked it up from AZ last week. EGR was removed and blocked off so it was replaced with new EGR.
Howdy,
You did not indicate what year model this is....but if it's an 04(I think) or later and you remove or block off the EGR cooler, you must upload a "tune" to keep the MIL off.
After tuning, most tuners are not required to be left connected.
So you could still have the NON-EGR tune still in the ECM
You'll probably either need to take it to a dealer and have them flash the ECM with the latest OEM tune, or you'll need to use the original tuner to "flash" it back to the OEM tune (assuming it was "saved").
When you mention egr,, are you talking about the valve that the harness plugs into?? There must be an egr cooler installed also. There are two (actually 3) parts to an egr delete. If you are going back stock,, all those parts need reinstalled.
It is an 04 built in 03.
Any idea what the dealer charges to flash it?
EGR cooler is still there, just the EGR valve was removed and a block off plate was installed. The plate was removed and a new EGR valva was installed. Everything else passed smog inspection but the EGR showed "not ready" when the smog tech checked it through the OBD2 port.
If it has a flat block off plate then the egr cooler is prob welded shut. The truck wouldn't run with no egr valve and a functioning egr cooler. I have seen egr valve block offs that look just like the egr valve,, meaning it goes into the bore,, rather than just capping it off. If you had one of those block offs that goes into the bore,, then what you are wanting to do should work. But if the block off was just a flat plate,, you are in for an intake removal.

If the emission monitor was just "Not Ready" you may just need to drive it for awhile until the pcm does a self check and makes it "Ready". If you had disconnected the battery before inspection it will give you a not ready status. So drive it for a couple of drive cycles and then have it checked with a scanner to see if all monitors are "Ready" status.
I spoke to a local diesel shop and they said once the egr is replaced it needs to be driven so that the "system" sees the sensor. He couldn't elaborate on how long or how many miles it needs to be driven but he said the "system" will eventually see the egr and it will then show "ready"?
Shouldn't take that long, 10 miles or so I would think. Who did the work on your truck? Did you buy it from a private party? Even an Az truck bought in California has to pass smog. If you bought it here there responsible.
