Ive got a 96 F-350 crew cab 4x4 long bed and I want to change tires . My question is this , can I safly put load range d tires on it ? I have noticed that some d range tires actually have a greater load capacity , at a lower pressure . What I want is like a 285/75/16 on 8 in. rims . Oh , does anyone have the correct back space that I need ? thanks .
I replaced the F-stones w/Dunlop load range (LR) D tyres. The F-stones were 120/117 and the Dunlops are 119/116, only ~50kg./110lb. lighter max. load difference. I went with the Dunlops beacuse they are 60000 milers v. 45000 milers LR E tyres. Also, I don't haul a lot of heavy loads on a regular basis.
As for the pressure, the Dunlops have a max. PSI of 60 v. 80 PSI on most LR Es I've seen. Since I usually run w/o a load, I dropped the PSI to 40 on the rear and keep the max. 60 PSI on the front to compensate for the weight of the engine. If I kept 60 on the rear w/o a load, the centre of the tyre would wear much faster, like any overinflated tyre would.
If you don't do a lot of heavy hauling, I believe you can safely put LR Ds on.

Tire Question
Check out the 19.5 inch tires and rims at www.ricksontruck.com. These tires in load range F and G. If you are worried about the load on your tires, this is the way to go. Load range G tires will allow you to run singles on the back of a dually (not recommended, but if you happen to have two flats on front ...?)and still have more load capacity than the factory setup.
