This might sound like a dumb question but were is the fuel filter located???? im new to the forum and have a 96 f250 and cant fine the fuel filter thanks dan
I was just looking to change the fuel filter in my 92 350 diesel. I found the fuel filter on top of the engine, just to the driver's side in front of the air filter. I was looking for some instructions on how to remove the filter, I'm no mechanic, but it shouldn't be technical. Can anyone provide the steps for removal? thanks
I have a 99 psd, the fiter is located just behind the black plastic peice that says powerstroke on top of the motor. If you have the smae thing you'll need to remove the plastic peice.
You have to remove the 3 10mm nuts that hold the plastic engine cover and remove it. Very easy. Then you will be looking at the fuel filter canister... use a screwdriver on it's side to loosen the top. Slowly lift out the filter and replace it. Make sure you replace the gasket, and you get it in there right - don't over tighten and spit the gasket out.
I have a 2002 PSD and there are only 2 13mm screws that hold down the plastic cover, however, the fuel filter canister only has star-driver screws, and two of them. I am trying to make sure that I am pulling this apart correctly before I get myself into trouble. Any hints on replacing the fuel filter on the 2002 PSD?

Nope, on the pre-'99 Power Stroke engines you don't have to remove the plastic cover. There is a lid that pops up in the middle so that you don't have to remove the cover.
Speaking of fuel filters.
What's with the big price increase earlier this year on filters for the 99-03 7.3's? The best price I have found lately is about $15. I've seen them as high at $27 and I know the dealer charges more than that.
I believe the cover he is refering to is the plastic screw cover that holds the entire filter in place. Thats the first time I've heard of a cover coming with the filter. Normally its just the filter with the o-ring seal.
On my 02 it is not necessary to remove the plastic "Powerstroke" shield in the front.
There is more than enough room to open the housing and remove the filter without removing the shield.
To unscrew the housing lid I use a pair of pliers with the jaws open and insert the jaws vertically into the channels in the lid and twist the handles of the pliers.
The whole job takes less than 5 minutes.
There are some confusing info here due to different years/engines. I have a 96 F-250 PSD too, start engine ,drain water seperator first, turn engine off. Remove the engine dress-up cover (black says powerstroke diesel on it) three nuts. If it is missing already oh well, one less step. Then you will see on top of the engine a black circular cover with fins on it. That is your fuel filter canister cover. unscrew it with a screwdriver held sideways through the fins. Carefully lift the cover up, the filter should come with it, if not set the cover down and pull the filter out slowly. Have a coffee can close to catch the fuel dipping off. there will be a o-ring that fits on the center stem inside where the filter was, remove the o-ring if it didn't come off with the filter. The filter will come off the black cover (self explanitory). Only buy a high quality fuel filters ie; Racor. Not Wix/Napa Put the new filter on the black cover. Put the new small o-ring on the black stem, bevel up. The good quality filters will have a beveled small o-ring not a regular o-ring. The large o-ring should be square, it goes in the cover. Reinstall in reverse be careful the Lg. o-ring stays in the groove while tightening. Really no big deal, Good luck!

You do it different than I.
I leave the engine off, remove the cap and then drain everything before I remove the filter, makes for less mess if you catch the drainings at the bottom.
