I purchased a Konnwei KW 808 and it is by far the biggest piece of crap ever! It only powers up when you plug it into the vehicle, the screen lights up but no text or anything. buttons beep but nothing happens. They tell me to restart the unit which I have done many times but still nothing. Then they tell me to send it back to China (at my cost) and they will check it out and either fix it or send me another one. The company in New Jersey doesn't want to back up the item they sold me. So anyway stay away from this unit! end rant.... What is the best one under $75 out there?
ELM327 Bluetooth adapter and Car Gauge Pro works well for me on a smartphone. The adapters are not all equal, the particular one I have works very well and came from the seller yellow*_*stone on ebay for about $14. I have used a couple others that either wouldn't communicate at all with most vehicles, or they wouldn't interpret the data properly and give weird readings.
There's your sign, friend. I'll buy a Lego set that was made in China, but nothing with working parts. Especially something as important as a code scanner.
I've got an old INNOVA scanner; I bought it in the early 00's. It doesn't seem to work on the newer vehicles (>2008). I'm guessing it's the CAN protocol that's got it stumped. It works great on my older vehicles, but I've got to erase a CEL on my 2013 Taurus SHO. My requirements are similar to the OP (>$75 bucks), and I'd like a dedicated unit rather than a smartphone setup. Any recommendations (besides American made, which might be hard to find).
I've got an ELM327 with the CAN switch coming, and am going to download FORScan program for my Iphone. I should be out about $45 for the set, which is going to work on the WiFi band. Not my original intention to get a smartphone-based product, but this seems to be one of the better options available. Especially since the FORScan program is slanted to Ford products.
