aux. temp gauge/ gas engine

have any of you guys with gassers added an aux. coolant temp gauge?
this is something id like to do with my 99 v10. I want to keep the factory gauge and just add an aux old style ACCURATE gauge so I know whats really going on when im towing.
what kind of sensor did you use to make it work?
any ideas much appreciated

Use a scanguage or torque pro and get the coolant temp that way. Actually, it would be cylinder head temp but....

my scan tool is not easy to read, especially at night, or at a quick glance . it also reads what the computer is reading.
I would like a gauge that reads from its own sensor, and separate from the trucks computer systems and sensors.
any thoughts?
also, what is the max safe temp? 230 loaded and climbing hills?

I'm talking about a scan gauge 2 or edge insight or the android app. They will show the temp right in the screen, far easier than running a scan tool.

If that is what you want, by all means add another gauge and sensor but you are going to find that the data provided to the ecu is dead on.

I agree with Chris, a gauge that reads from the OBD port is the way to go here. Drilling and tapping another point of failure into your cooling system isn't smart when the truck is equipped to give you that data from the factory.

X3 on using existing sensors via obd2. I am using DashCommand with a Wi-Fi obd2 dongle.
My 2011 6.2l reports both coolant temp and cylinder head temp. The cylinder head temp is supposed to be the more accurate representation of engine temp, but that's just what I have read. My cylinder head temp runs 8-10 degrees higher than coolant temp.
Towing 8.5k up a mountain in Virginia last week my coolant temp got up to around 230, with the transmission pretty much following.

I've got an Aeroforce Interceptor in my 2001 F450 V10 bucket truck. Also had one in my last bucket truck, a 1997 F Super Duty with 7.3.
Monitors all kinds of functions. I've been happy with both of them.

In my 2003 Cadillac CTS daily driver I just installed BlueDriver. It's an OBD port Bluetooth device with apps installed on both iPhone & iPad. There are also apps for Android. It monitors live some live data like coolant temp, intake air temp, RPMs, speed, etc. It also reads codes and resets MILs. If a code is set it'll tell you the common causes and most popular fixes. Haven't had it long but like it so far.

I have an Aeroforce Interceptor in my F150 EB. Fantastic for monitoring all sorts of things. Having said that, the Interceptor is probably overkill for a NA gas engine. The torque pro app is sufficient.
