My company has a 2009 E350 Van Ambulance with a blown motor. The engine is one of the problem plagued 6.0 Diesels. What options are available as a replacement engine. We do not want another one of these 6.0 engines.
follow the common fixes for the 6.0 and go from thre. Only other option is to put a cummins in (about $10k+ to convert). Try to put in a V10 or a 5.4 although it is light for such a load. The V10 should mate to the trans but then there is the cost to convert everything diesel to gas! Cheapest is to put in a BP diesel Ive seen ads for reman engines in the diesel mags. BTW all engines have issues, just go the route of least resistance to repair the unit.
My company has a 1999 E350 Van Ambulance with a blown motor. The engine is one of the problem plagued 6.0 Diesels. What options are available as a replacement engine. We do not want another one of these 6.0 engines.
Are you sure on the year / engine on this van?
If it's a 1999 E350, and Diesel, it would be a 7.3 engine.
The 6.0 Diesel engine was not installed in the E-series until 2004.
Regardless, the easiest way to go for replacing the OEM engine is a like engine, same type/size, as most all long blocks come without any accessories, and sheet metal, and all the components need to be swapped over to the "new" long block.
Changing the type/size engine in any vehicle almost require a complete donor vehicle to obtain the needed accessories, wiring harnesses, sensors to make the engine operational.
There is a 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel Forum on here that you might find additional information that your requesting.
Also, from what I've seen/read, most all re-man 6.0's have had the EGR coolant problem corrected as part of the re-man process.
Again as noted the replacement of the same engine is the easiest and cheapest and actually probably an easier fix. as [I] said the change to a cummins is about $10000 just for the adaptors and stuff and some labor I think. Then there is the cost of finding a running engine from ?? to swap over.. Some folks have around $20000 or so just in the swap. There was one guy in an article that said he gave up due to costs and that was in a pickup, much easier than a van. get one of the diesel mags and go thru the ads, there are a couple on short block long block engines. Depending on what is wrong with the current engine it just might be easier to rebuild and upgrade the problematic systems that are involved. Basically the 6.0 has been shown to be a good reliable engine when corrective actions for known failure points. Good maintenance once in place is also required, and this is true of any engine. The days of long slow idles are long gone, ford has a hi-idle kit available which helps preclude some issues. so check the 6.0 forums here and over on powerstroke.org
blown 6.0 is a pretty pricey one.
replace with a reman , but your core might be questionable . nothing else is a bolt up in its place. 7.3 powerstroke/4r100 driveline can go in but wiring harness and dash are different also.
any swap is going to be expensive!
I am looking at a 2006 E350 clubwagon with a blown 6.0 this weekend either for body parts for my rusted out 2003 E350 with a 7.3 or possibly a complete donor body to put my powertrain in. this one has under 250,000km and supposedly nice body> its a parts van.

Installing a Cummapart in a Ford is Incest ...Buy a Dodge Van if you want to do that in my opinion...No room for it in 2015....If you have read about the 6.0 then you know there is nothing basically wrong with the engine...It was rushed into production....Ford Engineers decided they knew MORE than the International Engineers who designed it in the first place....You don't see any 365 VT engines blowing up ........

Cummins has nothing to do with Dodge besides supplying engines to them. Ford started putting Cummins engines in the F650's and F700's in 93. They have been using the 4BT in F250, 350 and 450's in some South American markets for years. Heck new Toyota Tundra's have Cummins diesels in them.

Ford engineers?
every VT365 I have ever seen had worse problems than the 6.0 in Fords. they are a joke in a medium duty truck oooooooeeee maxforce 7....
same issues, but in a heavier truck> way more problems and a lot sooner, repaired and they come back again.
I've seen the 444E in internationals with 600 and 700,000km on them as long as they had a 7spd spicer , yes they are worn out but still in daily use and outlasting the VT365 by 3 times or more. replaced 1 or 2 injectors at a time when they can't get out of their own way and an occasional a glowplug in the 444Es and send them down the road.
I thought this was a VAN forum...everybody knows that Cummins makes engines for a lot of applications....I just gave my opinion to the OP
and as far as the VT365 goes , My friend is the Service Manager at an International Dealer and he would dispute what you said regarding reliability of the 6.0 vs their Version...
The MaxForce 7 is the 6.4 Not the 6.0...Totally different engine....the only thing that is even remotely similar the the Block and the Cummins in the Toyota is a V8...not a I6...again Totally different engines

everybody has an one > my ooooeee was meant to be about sticking another V8 diesel into a medium duty truck> yes we know 6.4/maxforce7 is a different beast. VT365 still a joke
i'm hoping we didn't scare away the OP with our opinions sorry
