I can only give my experience, which is with what are nominally ~34/35" tires. I have them on all four wheels, but my spare won't fit a tire that large, it won't even fit a 285/70/17 up there...so I just have a dinky 265/70 on the spare for that "worst case scenario" where I can't call a buddy or AAA. Granted, I have an aftermarket class V hitch which is bigger than OEM, but still. So based on that, I'd be weary of stuffing a 37" up in there.
In an emergency you can put the smaller tire on the front while NOT using 4x4. If it's a front that goes flat then no biggie. If a rear goes flat you would want to put one of the fronts on the rear (same size). This way you won't grenade the differential.

This really depends if he has an open diff or not. I can't see any issues running a smaller spare tire, temporarily, on the rear if it is an open/electronic locker.
I have a 35 under my 2014. I doubt you will get a 37 to make it. Like mentioned earlier with a smaller spare it needs to go on the front axle with the hubs unlocked. I had to do exactly that when I had a 37 go down. Unless you mount a full-size spare in the bed it comes with the territory
