Tom we have never had a problem getting heat out of our Odyssey. ?
Is the t-stat just bad ?
I'm pretty sure it's working as designed Andy. We never felt it to be inadequate until yesterday's cold snap after getting out of my F150. It's capable of warming the cabin, just at a slower rate than we prefer. The engine runs 20 degrees colder than anything else I've owned, so the heater core isn't going to be as warm.
I'll plug in my OBD gauge and check temps to ensure the thermostat is working right next time we go somewhere.

I am surprised that it runs that cool. Is there a cold weather kit for them at all. When we had -8* last year we had no problem with heat in ours but it was getting a warm start in a heated ( 40* ) garage.

I'm not aware of any factory authorized cold weather equipment for these.
Went out for a drive to collect some data. Peak temperature was 172 before the thermostat cracked and kept it between 169-171. Peak for the run was 174 after briskly accelerating up to speed, and it promptly declined to 170. Before backing into the garage I forced the temperature up by applying throttle in gear while at a standing stop. Vent temp climbed nicely as the engine temp went into the mid-170s.
Looks like the thermostat is working exactly as it should, so I think it's time to upgrade! I'll probably be installing a 180-degree stat in the next week or so.
Have you tried some cardboard in the grill.
I had to get a winter grill cover for my truck last year.
I haven't tried that, but I'm a bit reluctant to. The cooling system is always going to strive for the thermostat set point. If I obstruct the radiator the temperature may rise a bit, but the thermostat will continue to open as the cooling system tries to fight that. The only way I can see that working is if I block enough of the radiator to the point where engine heat overwhelms the radiator's capacity to cool, which would be dangerous because there would be no way to regulate maximum temperature.
I've used winterfronts in the past in applications where the truck couldn't come up to or maintain operating temperature, but that's not the problem here. It came up to 170 in about five miles and stayed right there.
Very true Tom. I did not think of that. My truck was not even getting up to the t-stat temp. I am just surprised that it only has a 170* stat. I see you can get a 180*. It is not like you are in -40* Good luck and please let me know what you do and the results.
Evening guys, had today off so I went biking at miller's pond state park again, lots of very technical terrain there. Josiah, it's actually very close to where you are, within ten minutes, just down the road!
Haven't seen you around Justin. Thought you moved on. Are you still working those crazy hours? Not stalking, but when I get my truck washed I drive by your place on the way home. My guess your sleeping.
Started coughing on Tuesday and Wednesday coughing and spitting up green crap. Nose blocked up and very little sleep. Got a flu shot this year so I can't have the flu or maybe I do. Hopefully it will pass. Drinking a lot of fluids and dosing off whenever I can.
Camper now stowed away for the season. Can't wait for spring.
Oh I tend to fade in and out here but, I wont leave altogether. Lol I drive the Mountaineer to work most days. I started working days back in September so I leave for work at approx 4:50am, and yeah I tend to work all the time (at least 6 days a week)
It certainly sucks getting sick, hope you feel better

I'm familiar with the name, but I'm not positive I've been there.
Andy, It's still un ridden, I probably wont ride it anywhere until the bike parks open back up in the spring, but I'll be ready

It's a few roads down from you, at the bottom of the road, millbrook rd, then follow it down until it turns into foothills rd, I think it's about 4 miles from 155
If I had a bike like Kyle's, I would be out in sub-zero and snow just to ride and I'm 67 years old. Kyle I don't know how you do it. My first Harley was a 63' Sportster used and I got it in October of 65 from Uncle Saul's in Hartford, CT. It was a 900 cc engine and I put a scoop to the rear jug to keep it cool and a set of fin tips on the exhaust pipes. Had a friend paint the tank with "Love the Ride" The point, I drove that bike right through that winter. Only snow storms when I had to wait for plowing to be done. My major problem was my "engineer boots" (frozen toes from steel toed boots) Leather jacket stuffed with newspaper (insulation) and chaps. wore a leather cap with goggles. Now if that doesn't age me. Had to ride the new bike.
We're going to be in the 20's and 30's for the next week or so. They were predicting 4-8" of snow for next weekend, but not anymore. There's still time.
John, I see a few guys out riding motor cycles during the winter, I've never actually ridden a motorcycle, I do ride my mountain bikes in the snow, I've got a nasty set of home made spiked tires I put on one of the bikes and the grip is ridiculous so I can go across all the frozen rocks and ledges like it's summer time, I'll have to get some pics for you!
The steel toes do get cold in the winter haha, I can only imagine how frozen you'd get, the one thing about being on the mountain bike is that you stay pretty warm since you are exercising.
