Need Help!

Hey guys so yes i'm a total newb haha. I'm starting to get interest in trucks since I got my 1981 Ford f150. So the question I have is how can I identify my 460 engine? I did manage to find some ID #'s. For my water Pump I found I found the #'s D2VE B-A and for my Head ID I found D3VE-A2A. I was wondering if you guys could possibly help me out in finding the year this engine was made ect. I do have a number that I found on the intake but i'm not quite sure if that'd help since it isn't a stock intake. Any help is appreciated!

You are aware that the 81's didn't come with a 460 - right? So, are you sure it is a 460?

As for your heads, they were engineered in 1973, and the water pump in '72. But, that's assuming you are getting the right numbers. A water pump carries the number 8501, and one for these trucks would be an E5TZ 8501-C. Similarly, the number for a head is 6049, and heads for these trucks would be E5TZ 6049-R.

Is there any way I can find out if it's a 460 Lincoln or any of that? I have an understanding that there are 351 m and 351 c so is there any different types of 460 as well? And if so how can I find out which one I have?

Well, for the 335 series at least, there were different block castings for the car vs truck engines - at least for the 400.... could very well be something similar was done for the 460 but I really don't know for certain... others can maybe help.... or you could maybe ask here:

Look for a casting code by/behind the starter.

D9TE is an external balanced truck engine.

if earlier D3VE it is internal balance and could be from a lincoln or truck.
C8VE would only be from a car because they weren't found in F-series trucks back in the 1960's

Just fyi, NVFord81, the "D" of D9TE is the decade, where "D" means 1970's and "E" means 1980's. And the "9" is the year within the decade, so D9 means the block was engineered in 1979. However, it was used for many years thereafter, but wasn't used prior to that.

Engineered for the 1979 *model*year.
It could have been cast and assembled in '78 for a '79 truck, as this was a 'running change'

I wasn't aware of that. I assumed that it was engineered in '79 so couldn't have been cast prior to that. Thanks for the explanation.

An easier visual clue is to look behind the harmonic damper for an external counterweight.

External balance engines are all '79& up.
There were no 460's installed in cars by that time.

So I didn't find a number on the starter but I did find it on the bracket that holds it. Would that work?

You want to know the date the BLOCK was designed. Not the starter. So, look on the block.

If it's external balance it's D9TE.
If internal it's a. D3 block with a dipstick in the timing case.

Either way it doesn't matter.
It's in a truck now.

Why do you care so much what year it came out of?
