Try to figure this out. '89 2.9L Ranger. Idles great, if you try to give it gas too fast, it boggs down. If you rev it up slowly, it works fine, but like I said, if you wanna accelerate, it just dosen't get enough gas and then backfires. Timing is 10* BTDC. I'm sure that all the plugs are firing, it's like the engine doesn't know you're trying to accelerate. Does anybody know if the sensors are the likely culprit and which ones are most likely???????
Hey Ken, you seem to be a lot of help to a lot of these guys, and I'm sure that you are much appreciated. I checked fuel pressure and got the following: No pressure Key On, Engine Off; between 20-28 psi with the engine running; no change with the regulator vacume removed; the pressure remains fairly constant once the engine is stopped for at least a few minutes. I put on a new fuel filter. The timing was TDC and I reset it to 10* BTDC where it belongs. The codes that I got are 11 or system pass whith the Key On Engine Off and 13,74, 77 with the engine running test. 13=cannot control RPM during low RPM test. 74=Brake switch is open 77=Operator error during dynamic response test or cylinder balance test. I don't know why it would not be able to control the RPMs during a self test or why there was an operator error. Do you think the fuel pump could cause this problem if it was low? Any suggestions as to my next course of action would be appreciated......Thanks
my Ranger pushes about 60 psi fuel pressure when running, but I don't know about 89's. Did you check it after the filter change? I changed mine recently and man was it plugged up! It caused a 'too much voltage to the fuel pump' or whatever code to come up. it went away with filter change and a little checking of the wiring system.
Have someone turn the key on and you listen to your pump with the gas cap off. If it doesn't purr nicely, then it's constricted or going out.
Those are some of my ideas, but I'm still learning...
That fuel pressure is low, I don't have my book but I beleive it should be arond 40psi. Have you changed the filter? If you don't have an idle problem I wouldn't worry to much about the 13. Is you idle speed set correct, is the throttle plate closing properly, do you have vacuum leaks, if you don't have any of these then clean/replace IAC.
Hey Ken, everybody, thanks for the help, I love this site and i wish there were more just like it. I replaced the fuel pump and problem solved....runs fast now too.
