No heat

I've got a fairly new to me 1997 F350 7.3, not much history on it. Runs good etc. Getting a bit colder now and went to turn on heat for first time - only blows cold.

I noticed after 30 minutes of driving the temp guage only gets to about 1/3. Upper radiator hose warm but not hot to touch. Both heater hoses barely warm.

Any suggestions on what to check next in line. Does it sound like a themostat issue? Anyone know the correct part # for thermostat? Not sure about this truck but I've had other vehicles where the so-called correct thermostat was a no go.

The gauge sounds about right. They usually seem to stay in n or o area. Could be thermostat, good idea to get a motorcraft one. Not sure what your temps are, when I had mine I had one of those adjustable heavy cloth covers across the grill. Helped when it got down around 0, got more heat in cab.

Both heater core hoses cold suggests a clogged core, remove both hoses in the engine bay and force some water through it in both directions with a garden hose until it flows clear. If you get a lot of nasty looking stuff out of it that was your problem, put the hoses back on and you should notice a lot better heat. If it's still not great take the glove box out and remove the rear cover for the heater box to see if there is anything preventing the blend door from completely closing.

Here is where mine stays. Is yours low on heat output or non existent heat output? I wish my heat was better and I've done everything suggested above. It works but I want it scorching hot like my mustang. That'll burn you out of the car on low even when it's below freezing.

Choate.. you got a 192 thermostat in that thing? You got no heat and no noise from a practically open exhaust, I'd bet you got one of the 351s with the low output cam, swap a Crane 444232 in that thing and I think you would fix both problems.

Lol I have heat just not as much as I'd like. It works so I'm not gonna mess with it. Not sure on stat temp. I'm betting if I put a 195 deg one the heat would be better.

As far as the engine goes, I believe you are right

By the way I think it was your exhaust that inspired how I had mine done.

thanks for the ideas. I flushed both heater hoses and connections in both directions. They ran from green to clear pretty quickly. Didn't see any grunge or sludge poor out. I peaked through glove box and saw the red top (in photo below) cable pull device. It seemed to turn fine when I moved the temp dial. And I thought I could hear a distinct "door closing" sound when I moved to hot. Where exactly is the blend door so I could see for certainty if it is closing all the way? Any other ideas? it is still blowing cold.

Blend door is def not your problem man. If its like it is you need to look at replacing the heater core (pretty easy from what I've read). The blend door is not ur problem I assure you. Its just to the left of the glove box btw. There is a huge vent slash heat thread over at Ford Bronco. I'll find and post it for u tomm.

Both heater hoses being coldish/definitely not warm seems like a tstat right? I mean this is AZ and it's been 60 degree daytime temps. One would think the heater hoses should warm up and get hot if tstat was working right?

First thing I would do is read the thermostat housing with an IR thermometer to see how much heat I have to work with in the first place.

Definitely sounds like your thermostat is stuck open.
