It has worked as long as i have had the truck. first issue was the other morning. i woke up at around 4 and i could hear the radio on. hasnt worked since then.
Something doesn't sound right. If the wire is cut then the chime shouldn't sound no matter the condition of the cylinder. When you say you heard the radio, was the truck not running? That could be accessory delay relay related. Does sound like something is amiss. I don't think the 01 had the troublesome vsm though. Ford started putting those in for the 02 model year. But why would the accessory delay relay trigger the key in ignition chime? It's possible something was modded somewhere and it's back feeding that circuit. Do you have an aftermarket radio? Or any other aftermarket electrical add ons?
I do have an after market radio, i put it in my self with a new harness and all soldered connections. it is disconnected now. i also have a secondary fuse panel, run off an 80 amp relay, which is also disconnected.
And yes, i was also thinking some kind of acc relay. but without a fuse to component diagram i have no idea of where to look.
Or the key and cylinder is worn out and sloppy and never actually rotated all the way into the off position even though the key was removed. I've seen keys that can be removed with the vehicle still running due to worn out locks and or keys
Wouldnt having the cylinder taped over prevent it from completing the circuit and triggering the acc?
That would be the goal, without looking And putting a multi meter to it though it's hard to say if it was done successfully. But generally speaking I would say that if it is dinging and taped over the tape job has failed somehow.
So with the headunit, master light switch, and all the dome lights disconnected. no change. also with the cylinder taped over. the only solution to stop it is pulling that 5 amp fuse.

Here is a link to a bunch of information including a link to the wiring diagram:
Thanks cyclevin, but most of the info in there is for 6.0
Sorry I didn't realize you had a 7.3 until I looked at your earlier posts. You should put the specs of your truck in your signature so everyone will know and won't be asking you all the time. Here is the only 7.3 wiring diagram I could find, it looks like its for an 02 model specifically:
