So about 3 weeks ago i bought a rebuilt 360 FE/FT short block on craigslist. It was rebuilt in 1997 by a reputable shop in my area. The buyer covered it in WD40 and wrapped it in plastic and that's how it sat for the last 18+/- years.
I've checked the crank end play, cleaned the cylinders and oiled them, now i'm cleaning all the crap out of the water jackets. I'm trying to stay away from taking the crank and pistons out of the block but what should i be doing to prep this thing for install in my truck?
Yes i'm doing this in the living room of my apartment and no i don't want to convert it to a 390.
side question:
anyone know what these are? i found them behind the middle freeze plug on either side.
Check the cam lobes for rust and pitting as I see the cam is installed. Remember to use a zinc additive for the oil as it isn't used in a lot of oils these days. If you do not use it, your flat tappet cam won't make it through the break-in. Myself, I would replace the rear main seal while you're this close. This will get you started.
Thanks Rod
I'm a bit green at this, i have a basic idea of what needs to be done but always feel like i'm forgetting things. Good call on the cam, i totally over looked it. The cam was still covered in moly from when it was built. No rust but the lube had some gunk or dirt on it. Cleaned her up and got new moly. You saved my cam and lifters! Now on to the main seal. Thanks again
After sitting that long, I would pull rod and main caps to be sure there is assembly lube in there... once upon a time I trusted a rebuilt engine and the rods and mains got wiped out in the first 30 seconds due to a lack of assembly lube...

Concur... and re-torque everything.
Since it is a short block, I suggest some reading at DIY Ford:
