need advise about cam's
I just bought a boat that has a 292 but the rear seal was bad, so I pulled the engine and made a few checks while it was out. to make a long story short !! the cam had excessive end play so I took it out and noticed that it had gear's instead of timeing chain, but the cam walked back and wore against my lifters. I got other lifters (good ones) out of a 312 and was going to use the cam but when comparing the cam's they are different some of the lobes are 180 out (or opposite sides) I checked the fireing order on the 292 and it's what the book says (15486372) the 312 did not have a distributeor so I could not check it. the cranksaft's are the same exept for the mains which I allready knew ( the best I can tell any way). the 312 I got from a scrapyard and it took 2 valves and the pistons are rusted in the holes so I cant get the crank out yet to compare the two side by side but the crank is good so being careful. My question is wat ame I missing or is it just the wrong cam ??? Thanks

It might be a reverse rotation engine. just a guess, sorry not much help, I sure wish I had a y block powerd boat, here are some links that might help
