2002 7.3 F250 Alternator upgrade

I replied the alternator in my truck about 4 years ago with a 170A unit. Recently my battery light on the dash started flickering. A voltage test while the light was on showed low output from the alternator so I figured it was time for a new one.

Since I work in a car audio shop I decided to pick up the single 215A ambulance unit. I also picked up the upper radiator hose for the ambulance (2000 E350 7.3L Van) and a new belt.

I had to pick up longer bolts (10x1.50 x 120mm) and, even after some grinding on the stock alternator bracket, I needed spacers at each bolt location. Fastenal didn't have anything in stock so I grabbed six 12mm nuts and used them for spacers for now.

I also picked up a 3-pin D-plug to wiring the new alternator into the factory wiring - one wire for ignition, one for B+.

With the new alternator riding higher than stock I ended up not running the belt under the idler at the top of the engine.

This alternator didn't have the shroud on it, so the big metal fan clearances a hole for itself in the underwood insulation.

Now, no matter what RPM I'm seeing a steady 14.3xV.

The fan on the alternator looks like a good idea.
It has been 10 years, and I would expect this alternator's life is over.
How many miles did you get out of it?

I hope you're seeing a good voltage rise off idle. Realistically you want to see at least 14.1 volts at idle from a healthy charging system.
