I'm curious about this: As both the Expedition and Explorer now have IRS, do they use the same differential? If so, is the differential undersized for the Expedition or oversized for the Explorer?
Don't know about new models, but historically they could have been different 8.8 v. 9.75 or the same 8.8 v. 8.8 depending on other drivetrain components.
I've heard the 8.8 is sufficient for most use (used in F150's too), but the 9.75 is obviously heavier duty. My 5.4L 4x4 has the 9.75.
^^^ not always . . . I also have the 9.75 rear end w/ 3.73 LS but have seen many a '97 - '02 5.4L Expy with the smaller 8.8 unit
anyway, the intital question was about the new IRS units used in the '02 and up Explorers vs the much larger and higher capicity unit in the '03 and up Exps . . .
