Hi, I know that these questions may seem silly, but I live in Australia (where we don't have Expeditions ), and I am building a special project where I am looking for a donor front independent type differential and need some info from you guys. Can anyone tell me if the Ford Explorer and the Expedition front differentials are the same? Are they a different housing altogether/ or the same. Is the Expedition a heavier duty differential? What is the lowest diff ratio that can be fitted to an Expedition. Any chance of 5.13:1? I know that these are very specialised questions, but even if one of you guys out there could steer me to a website or company that could possibley help with my queries I would be greatful . Regards, Trevor
The Expedition uses a high pinion 8.8" diff. The lowest gears I've seen for those are 4.88.
The Explorer uses a Dana 35 front diff.
Can you use a centered diff instead of an offset type front diff? I'm thinking of a 89-97 Thunderbird rear diff. It would be more or less like an old Jag rear diff with the same length axles on each side. It's an normal 8.8 and you can get down to 5.43 gears for it.
For a picture of a T-bird diff in a sandrail take a look at http://www.batalias.com/wayne1.htm
For a selection of gears look at http://www.ring-pinion.com/default.asp
