I pull alot of stuff with my truck but it is always a pain to get it going. I have a 1992 ford f250 with a 351 and a 5 speed manual it has 200 horsepower which is not much. I am looking for ways to bump up my horsepower. I replaced my air filter with a K&N and noticed very little power gain. I don't want to put to much money into it. I have also upgraded my rear suspension to handle more. I also have an exhaust dump. I pull a lever and it bypasses the muffler so it is basically straight piped. what should I do?
What gears does the truck have? If 3.55 your very best first move will finding 4.10s for it... assuming you have stockish sized tires on it.
Engine wise you need GT40 heads with upgraded springs, a crane 444232 cam and lifter set, and longtube headers with a completely new 3" single exhaust system.
ok. that is not as bad as I thought it would. Also would you go carborated and get rid of all of the fuel injection parts or keep it fuel injected. I am a fan of carborated engines
A 351 is far from a towing platform, but I would make a few recommendations:
1) a tune up
Why? My 96 f350 460 5spd 4x4 I did a tune up. I climb the hill next to my house in 4th gear. there is a mailbox at the bottom. If I am doing 30 at that mail box and fire wall it I would get 55-60 at the top. After the tune up (new o2 sensor, from ford, new cap, new plugs, new fuelfilter new air filter, new wires, new fluids, test on same hill, on same day, on same tank of gas, got me almost 70 and I let out, don't want a speeding ticket!!!
2) check fuel pressure these things have notorious fuel pump issues.
3) maybe look into a compression check, make sure the engine is in good shape.
We used one of these for a few years hauling cattle, horses, camper, farm equipment, boat, it towed fine. did good almost like the 460 on the flats and in the hills was fine until you lost rpm, then it got its but kicked by the 460 due to the 460's capability to tug down lower in rpm. It will never get rolling from a stop like a bigblock or a diesel, but these are respectable engines with the right equipment wrapped around them.
I have already changed all of the fluids, plugs, fuel filter, wires, but I have not changed the o2 sensor. I have a performance air filter in it. It does fine on flat roads it just really sucks at going up hills. I don't want to do too much expensive things to it because I keep having to fix it because kids at school keep taking things off of it. Like this week I had to tighten down the throttle body. They took off two of the bolts. and they also like to take off the intake hoses so it breaths in unfiltered air.
