i own a 90 f-250 w/5.8 and 5-spd zf trans w/3.55 rear gears. motor was rebuilt 22k ago.motor runs great. I just need to get more power from the engine. I pull 26ft 5500lbs camper with it. it does a pretty good job of pulling it .but when it comes to any hills it needs more power. this is what i've done so far. new true dual exhaust no cat. new dist cap, rotor, plugs, air filter, fuel filter,t-stat 195 degree.fuel psi is good.buumped timing to 14degrees.
what I was thinking was cam, double roller timing set,k&n filter, gt40 heads and headers.short tubes??
was told that the timing sets in these motors is factory installed retarded???
A cam upgrade will certainly help(see my sig line), the cam in that motor is pretty small. Don't waste your time on shorty headers they won't give you any more power where you need it, longtubes and a quality 2.5"-3" single are the way to go. These two upgrades alone will really wake that motor up, more TQ right from idle and way more midrange grunt. Sid's suggestion for more gearing is also valid, 3.55 is a good all around milage gear but it's not optimum for hauling loads with the 31" or 32" tires on that F250... assuming they are stock size. Better heads is always a good idea for the 5.8, again should give you more power everywhere, but if I had to make a choice between gearing or heads I'd take the gears, they'll put the power you have to better use.
