I've owned the truck under two years and the splash shield has come loose three times.
The dealership said
1) they get a ton of F 150's in with this problem
2) snow pulls down the shield in the winter
3) they'll reattach it for free
4) will charge me if it needs replacement
5) it's not needed and recommended it come off
6) not covered by my extended warranty because the shield is considered "trim"
7) asked who had changed the oil - I think the shield has to come off to change the oil (it was the dealership)
Based on my experience, it seems extremely poorly designed and a potential safety issue - wouldn't want to be the car behind me when the shield comes off.
Is the shield needed? Other chat rooms seem inconclusive. Any luck getting Ford to fix this and pay for the replacement?
Other than this I love the truck, but 3 service calls for 1 issue in under a year is ridiculous.
Are you referring to the giant felt shield under the ecoboost trucks? If so just remove it and keep driving. It is not needed at all and most are already on the highways by now.
I've had every oil change done at the dealer and I know for a fact that they remove it to dump the oil. I saw the lube tech running across the holding area with mine in his hands one day and crawled under my truck to reinstall.
It seems to me that it's far enough behind the engine that if it were removed, nothing in the engine bay would get splashed on anyway. Mine is still securely fastened but, if that were to change, I'd dump it.
