Sorry, new here so I'll apologize up front. I have a 1995 F150 2 wheel drive with an AOD tranny. I know rusting out oil pans is a common problem for my engine, so I'm sure this has been discussed previously, but I found nothing in a forum search under oil pans, nor in looking back through the last 7 pages of posts. Could you please humor me?
Is there an aftermarket pan available from someone besides Ford? I hate to pay them for a replacement pan that will probably rust out just like the original.
Also, my trusted mechanic wanted a small fortune to replace. Seems he thought there would be a lot more labor involved than I thought. Does its require anything more than loosening the motor mounts and jacking up the motor to get the necessary clearance between the crossmember and the crank to get the pan out? Seems pretty straight forward so I guess I'll save myself a couple hundred and do it myself. Am I missing something? Does something major have to be done to gain the required clearance that I don't know about?
-Clearance: Remove your EGR from the back of the manifold or it will crush up against your wiper motor and not allow the engine to come up far enough. Be carefull as the bolts used here are steel and the manifold is aluminum, top one on mine was siezed in but i was able to drill it out very easily.
-Pan: You can buy the pan from napa, but it looks exactly like the pan from ford, and they cost the same (surprised the hell out of me). Supposedly ford knew of this rusting problem and made the replacement ones thicker, don't know the truth in that but, i gave the pan i bought about 2 cans of spray paint, just in case.
While your gonna have the pan off, I reccomend replacing the oil pump and cleaning out the pickup tube, cheap insurance, and you don't have to do it later on.
Perfect...just the kind of info I needed. I've dropped pans, oil and tranny plenty of times....was just worried about clearance. The hint about the EGR is just what I need. Called NAPA locally couple days ago..they did not have. Tried local junkyards...even went and picked one up from junkyard, but then noticed the oil pick up was in a different place...must have came from a much older truck...so now I have to take that one back and go to Ford for a new one. Good point on oil pump, I'll ck the cost. I'm just getting the truck ready to sell and dont want to sink anymore than I have to in it. Shoulda taken my neighbors advice and just JB welded it closed and let it be the next guys problem....but I couldnt look someone in the face selling it if I knew something was that wrong.
I had same problem. Replaced pan with a new Ford OEM pan. My Mechanic said that ford used a really lousy paint at the time (early 90's-- mine is '92) and moisture got under the paint and caused the rust. The bad pans can be identified by their color-gray. The new pans aren't any thicker, (don't quote me on that) but I am told they have been properly painted. My new pan had a good gloss black on it. The old one lasted 134,000 miles, it is hard to complain, I hope the new one makes it that long.
