Idle up source

What causes elevated engine idle when cold or initial startup? Asking another way, what would cause it not to have the elevated idle on start up?

When it gets cold the EBPV closes and the idle increases to heat up the engine (and your heater) quicker. I forget what that exact temp is, but in the 32F range. There are a few other prerequisites. Where I live it rarely happens.

Why do you ask?

IIRC it's engine oil temp and intake air temp that both trigger high idle. Depending on the temps will determine at what RPM the truck will idle. Glow plugs must be off before idle will increase. Transmission must be in park and foot off the brake for automatics, in neutral and e-brake on for hand shakers.

The EBPV operates independently of the high idle.

If you start the truck and it doesn't idle up for the first 2 minutes, that means the glow plugs are still operating. Once they shut off the idle will increase if IAT and EOT are both within required ranges for high idle.

If neither the IAT or EOT are within temperature range for high idle, the idle will remain at the normal range ~650 RPM give or take.

If both the IAT and EOT are within required ranges, the elevated idle will vary depending on those temperatures. The colder the temperatures, the higher the idle. Off-hand I think the high idle caps at either 900 RPM or 1,100 RPM in the stock calibration.

An IAT or EOT sensor that is not correctly reporting the temperature can affect the high idle operation.

My E99 seems to max at 1100 on high idle.

I wish I wasn't in a climate that allowed me to figure that out . . .

Thanks guys. Good info. Mine does not idle up at all but temps for me so far haven't got down below 55 deg or so. My idle is around 650. We'll see when temps get down how it does.

Thanks again

If you are looking into a hydra chip and a specific tune you could ask for a high idle (usually included) option. Then you could start the truck and if it did not go into a high idle on its own you could select the tune and when you felt you were ready go back to your driving tune.

No need for high idle. Just making sure it was working right in case it was a symptom of a bigger problem.

Don't expect your high idle to kick in with temps staying above 50. I don't expect to see high idle until nights in the low 40's. Your EBPV should probably be closing at those temps. After about 2 minutes or so your exhaust will start to sound like a jet engine at idle.

Well guys, no idle up yet. Temp down to 29 one morning. Start up is good since the new ICP install, just no idle up in cold. No big deal, just wondering why. One thing I have notice (while idling) is a slight idling speed change. No noticeable RPM change, but I can hear the engine change a tad. Might be nothing.

No codes, but I can read them now with scan tool. If I wanted to check or fix this, what suggestions you guys have?

Thanks

I would start by checking the sensor readings koeo and also koer and make sure they are working (EOT, IAT, BARO, MAP, EBP etc). The EOT sensor may not be reading correctly. Just a thought.

What's your PCM code? Warm-weather calibrations were made that don't elevate the idle.

Don't know. I will check next time I plug in scanner. Interesting.
