7.3 questions

Had to pull my passenger side head due to a couple stuck glow plugs. Found this aluminum spacer between the back valve spring and cylinder head wall/lip. Any idea where it came from. Pretty sure I didn't drop it there while working since I've never seen it before. And is this a coolant temp sensor on the front of the passenger side head? It appears to be leaking so I thought I'd replace it while I was there. What's it control?
Thanks

The sensor is for the temp light in the dash I believe. I have no clue on the spacer, but it looks to have been in there for a while. Have the valve covers ever been off before?

I'm sure the vc's have been off before but I don't know when. Hopefully I'll be putting the head back on today. Ready to try out the new Baby Swamp injectors.
