I'm working on a 1990 7.3 IDI. I pulled glow plugs, pressurized radiator and found water flowing out of one of the GP holes while piston at TDC. I guessed it was a head gasket and pulled head. I see a crack going to the intake valve seat. See picture. Also seems to have very small short cracks off of some of the holes for the GP hole. I'm guessing coolant was leaking at the intake seat. Do you think this engine was overheated at one time or anyone know of any order causes for this? I guessing this head isn't really fixable.
believe it or not, most heads you pull will have cracks in them . some are just worse than others.
you can have the head magnafluxed, but i really think it is not repairable.
Your not alone. I just replaced heads because of cracks though i wasnt loosing as much coolant as you seem to be. I bought a used motor and the guy i got it from gaurented the heads to be good or my money back. A little work and money but it turned out good .
It depends how the crack is deep, and exactly where it goes, but can be repaired, but not worth the price when u can buy good heads as they are still around. U would not believe what we repair here in Europe, basically they heat it up, weld, plane, make hard steel valve seat, press it in and presurize to check.
According to this site, the only yearly changes made in the head was when they started turbocharging. The exhaust valves were made from a stronger alloy, and - if this even counts - They used different head gaskets.
