I have been trying to get my 79 F150 4X4 with 400M back on the road... been sitting around for several years now. it fired right up after a new battery, new gas and carb rebuild, but it looks like I have a valve stuck open. no compression on #4. can the valve cover/head be pulled without pulling the engine out? AC looks like it is going to make that difficult
I don't have a 400M nor AC but it seems to me that the VC can come off without undue hardship. I mean, it would be silly design by Ford engineers to not be able to do that at the least...
The head, hmmm.. ya may have to be creative or at least patient with removing the head. There is only one way to find out and that is to attempt to do it.
Got it off, but it didn't come without a little force... Designers could have given just a little more room and it would have been easier.
Getting it back on with the gasket is going to be challenging.
Looks like push rod is under the rocker of #3... Probably bent but didn't look like it. We'll see tomorrow... Wasn't able to take it out because of a prior engagement but will take it out tomorrow.
How hard is it to get matching push rods for that engine? That's if the lifter is still functioning and the valve isn't stuck...
If the engine is stock you can get a push rod at the auto parts store or JY. No biggie. Tolerance is not super tight with a hydraulic cam. Just double check length by laying an original and replacement on the bench and compare with straight edge and square.
If the block and/or head were heavily milled in the past it could have custom length push rods but not likely. If so, you can measure and order from Summit or Smith Brothers or the machine shop that works on the heads can take care of it.
