Never really looking at the hubs on my ex I looked today and they have been the lock position since I've owned it and no telling how long before then. I've had it for about 8 months now. Is this a bad thing? I was looking at replacing them with manual hubs and looking into the mm 449ss.
Not necessarily a bad thing, but it'd be a good idea to see if they flip back to open and maybe grease them up a bit. Wouldn't hurt to check the axle shaft u-joints as well and see if they're worn out.
I also do hear a good thumping sound when at full turn in the front end. I always thought it was the u-joints. If this is an issue that leaving them in lock position can make happen then they are most likely the culprit. Im looking at doing the ball joints soon and will be inspecting other things as well and will for sure look into the u-joints now for replacement just in case.

I used the #2 write-up in the tech sticky up top to do my F'ing ball joints (read: turned into full front end rebuild). It also includes the parts list to make your own seal installer from a hardware store (sourced my parts from Home Depot for $15, plus 15 minutes turning the flange down to size with an angle grinder).
I was able to use the 4x4 this morning and it seemed to be working from what I could tell. The only thing that was weird is that when almost at full turn left and right my steering wheel would kind of jerk I guess u could say. I've driven 4wd with independent front suspension and know how that feels but never driven with a front end like this. Is this a normal thing for this set up on the Excursion/Super Duty?
That's the wheels binding up because they aren't getting enough slippage with the ground you're on - if on pavement or other very high traction surface this can be really hard on parts
