Hey fellas. Ive been checking out the forums and Ive hit a wall as it were. Ive got an 86 f150 with the 300 i6. The previous owner/s have hacked up my wiring pretty good and plugged hoses. The engine compartment has unused connectors everywhere. Surprising the truck runs somewhat half decent. Ive been digging through the shop manual, haynes, and through this website. I have a choice.
1.) DS conversion. pro's. get a more simple ignition and carb setup. cons Im not sure what I can and can't take off emissions wise after the swap.
2.) fix emissions. pro's. if I ever move from here (no emissions testing) I can keep the truck and it'll pass the test (hopefully) cons. Im finding it difficult to source parts and diagrams.
fellas if you guys can help me out I vow to give play by plays w/ pictures so that it'll help everybody else. I know there are loads in my same boat but sadly many of the posts that had pictures no longer have them.
I, too, purchased a 1986 F150 with 4.9L engine complete with a mostly non-functioning feedback ignition system. I chose to take the Duraspark route. Attached is a link to an ongoing write-up of changes made to mine as well as results.
sorry I haven't replied in a while. The truck has been testing me. Got new tires waiting on ball joints, a lower radiator hose and a few odds and ends. coolant leaks, oil leaks, and transmission leaks...86 300 i6, what setup are you running. Are you mad with a duraspark setup? Id also like to know exactly how this controlled carb setup works. If anybody has a bead on a thread about the ins and outs of this system holler!

btw pics of the ride coming soon
Maybe look into a HEI distributor if it's in question.
I was directing the question to you. Thanks for the reply, I read the gas mileage article you sent me as well. Ive got to say that a lot of the timing curve speak is new territory for me. looking forward to learning about it though. Ive got a lot to learn. Ive been looking through the junkyards trying to get a hold of the duraspark setup without having to buy new. All I've come up with so far is a slick factory cigarette lighter. Ive got a few more to check....thank y'all for the help so far.
