It is easiest with a tool that contacts the slots or nubs on some of the retainers. Wipers, lights and heater bezel, at least, can be a lot easier to remove with a tool like one of these two. The second one is a Scott Drake tool. I have a similar, but larger opening tool for the wiper bezels on top of the cowl and it also worked great.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with how the control ***** are attached to the levers on the early model 61-64 Ford trucks. If anything like the 65, they are either secure by a set screw, a spring clip ( a small opening/gap on the bottom of the **** there's a concentric spring type clip, when the tension is released the **** will slide off. Usually takes a small mini screwdriver, or some thing similar, that will fit but not damage the opening and gently move the spring, can not recall whether forward, or back releases the tension on the clip.) The 65 headlight switch there's a release pin, either on the top, or bottom of the switch when depressed the **** and lever slide out of the switch.
Great source for a tool to remove the 'bezel', certainly avoids damaging the paint.
Hopefully members familiar with will chime in; looking forward at being educated.

One note to add to what Dave said. Make sure you disconnect the battery before reaching up behind the headlight switch. Otherwise the headlight bulbs might not be the only thing it lights up.
