This is one of those posts that might not be of huge benefit to others, but something I have been curious about nonetheless, since owning this truck.
I guess to be fair, since after replacing the HPOP since it was started so few times before that by me due to purchase just before it went bad.
My question is this.
Does anyone else here notice that sometimes she will fire up in literally two revs, and other times might take a few seconds more?
Also, sometimes, when she fires, you get what I call that initial split second "surge" before it settles down to idle, and yet other times she fires up fine, but kind of that "well I guess I better start now" slower spooling up to running status, like it's getting fuel slower(all in the time span of a few seconds keep in mind)
I can't say it makes much difference hot or cold.
My best guess is it's just a 6.0 thing and maybe even unique to just some folks trucks.
Don't read to much into my question. I suppose I could post some vids to make it more clear but I have a feeling someone else has this at times.
First start of the morning, RPM comes up to around 1500 and then settles to idle at 650. Like the surge your describing, then I hear the turbo come up to speed as well.
On days I plug the truck in, and what I believe because the oils warmer... it just starts and builds to idle RPM.
Truck has always taken a few seconds to start, like 2-3. If I park nose down, almost instantly. I have updated standpipe, dummy plugs and STC fitting. I could have a dummy plug o-ring issue or HPOP seal issue. When I take the turbo apart next, I'll probably check the HPOP seal and I'll check the IPR screen (I have a new screen already waiting).
Twice over this weekend it started as soon as I turned the key. Literally all it took was for the starter to engage. Most of the time I'd say I have a 2-5 sec crank to start, hot or cold. I've had this happen before as well. though the instant starts are not very often. Engine Idle is always consistent though unless its cold enough to warrant a higher idle (not the kick up high idle)
Yep, as both your posts describe. The farmer I work for part time during fall and spring field work has some 7.3's, 6.0's and one 6.4 in his 250's and 350's.
There is one 6.0 in particular that starts very similar as posted. You can literally hit the starter and she's running, more often than not. One of the other's as Randy mentioned will always just kind of lope up to idle once it fires.
My 04 starts within 2 seconds ... unless I park it for a couple days. Then, I can wind on it for 10 seconds and it won't fire till I key it off and on, then it fires within 2 seconds again.
I kinda feel its a sync issue that sometimes it just doesn't pick up the cam or crank until its switched on an off again.
The lope to idle, if it when its cold outside, I'm thinking that's normal. My old 7.3 and for that matter all the other 7.3 I've been around up here in the Dakotas do that and since the 6.0 injectors use the HEUI principle I would say it is normal also. I ask a fuel injector repair shop about the lope when it is cold once, and they weren't concerned. Basically they said is basically cold/thick oil doesn't sufficiently flow thru the injector and soon as it heats up and comes thinner then you have sufficient flow and thing smooth out.
I have this too - sometimes fires on the button, sometimes after a second or so, but always within 2 secs. sometimes idles rough when its colder, but only for a few secs. waiting for some Rev-X which cured it last winter
