I've got a 2012 F250 with the 6.2l with about 45,000 miles.
The other day I was pulling someone out that was stuck, I was in 4wd and I noticed my back tires started spinning and the fronts were not.
Afterwards I got on pavement and tried both 4x4 high and 4x4 low, they both light up on the dash like normal, but it is not engaged.
I assume this will be covered under my power train warranty, but was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem? Or any ideas on what to check out first?
Sounds like your hubs aren't locking ?
Do you have auto hubs or manual ? If auto they are controlled by vaccum and they have their issues. If auto you need to get out and manually lock the hubs
Rule of thuimb is to perform a 4x4 hi and low test once every month. While performing this test, it should be done while turning the hubs to lock and unlock. Most important. Perform this test on a loose or unpaved surface. The vaccumm lines do fail from time to time. Which reminds me, I need to make sure everything is ready to go for this winter.
I have auto hubs, but I can also lock them manually. In fact when I had to pull someone out when I noticed that the 4wd was not engaging I put it in 4 low and got and locked the hubs. I didn't notice if that made the front tires spin but I yanked that truck right out.
I will test them today by manually locking the hubs.
This one spurred me on to check mine out before the snow starts flying around here. thanks for reminding me
Checked 4hi and 4 low both auto lock and manually locking and everything seems to be working fine. But I did notice my right side hub was extremely hard to turn to the lock position. Is this something I should be worried about?maybe replacing them be in my future plans?
I use my 4x4 fairly regularly so I don't normally test it. I do a lot of beach driving and normally use 4x4, and most hunting and fishing spots I'll use it. This was the first time I'd noticed a problem.
How did the testing go, F250FX4? If you decide to get your dealer involved, let me know; I'll research ways to assist.

Just checked it. So when I manually locked the hubs on my wheels, it went in 4x4low. After unlocking the hubs, I attempted to switch to 4x4 high and it made a weird whirring noise I have not heard before. I went back to 4x4 low, waited a little bit, shifted into drive then back to neutral and tried to get into 4x4 high and then 2x4 and it didn't make any noise.
So somehow my hubs are not locking when I turn the **** to 4x4 high or 4x4 low. I assume the computer doesn't know they are not locking since the 4x4 lights up on the dash like normal.
I crawled around under the truck looking for something obvious like a connector or a hose popped off and didn't see anything.
I just talked to the dealer. I'm going to drop it off tomorrow after work for a diagnosis. The guy I talked to said he couldn't tell me until they looked at it if it would be covered under warranty.

Come back and share what you find out at the dealership, F250FX4. If you need me to jump in and help after receiving a diagnosis, I'll be here.
