Finally I have a question for those of you who have gone for a re-gear before. I use my truck all day every day and make my living with it currently. I understand that I will not be driving obscene distances with 4wd engaged but want good reliability. Should i go with the Dana ring and pinion or can i get by with a quality off brand?
Thanks.
- Priced up ring and pinion, along with shim kit and bearings. Much cheaper in the USA than Canada, looks like i'll be buying from our southern friends!
- Picked up two 17" wheels for the front. Once i am done the gear swap I'm going to run the solid axle only until i can track down a trans and drive shafts.

Not fancy wheels by any means, but that's not what i'm after. Cheap is good for me, both rims and two good tires for $110!!!!!
More updates to come, getting into the meat of the swap very soon.
- I picked up the grade 8 hardware for the coil buckets. No need to take off the old radius arms, they should bolt right up to the old brackets which are in good condition. Just need a deep 15/16 socket
- Ordered an OEM 4.10 ring and pinion. Hopefully should be here soon.
- Wire brushed and painted the axle and radius arms.
- Now have a few solid choices for transmissions. Trying to figure out if i should go with a brand new trans or a good used one.
~~ Once the ring and pinion get here I will do a detailed write-up on my experience, after that I will swap the solid axle under the truck until I can nail down which trans to go with. ~~

Grade 8 hardware:

Pretty rusty:

Radius arms didn't have much rust at all:

Looking MUCH better:

Not looking bad at all:

Really looking forward to getting this done before the snow really starts to fly! Just for fun, have a look below at the snow we had to deal with last winter. That bank is 13 feet tall. 2WD MUST go!

As always thanks for reading along
Materials used were two old brake rotors, a 12 ton bottle jack and some 1/4X4" plate.
I know that presses can be dangerous but I tested it to the point that i could no longer pump the jack, my welds held up just fine.
Have a look!
