Gas Pedal Bracket Broken

So I am trying to figure out why rod on firewall outside) has so much slop.......bracket on firewall (inside) truck is broken in two. I have read that some have changed over to cable system using existing rod. Does anyone know if the 73-79 pedal assembly and all will bolt up? Actually found a parts yard that has
a couple of 68's and a '75. While I'm at it want to do away with the crazy trapeze set up that it currently has. Found that with pedal all the way down to floor I'm not even close to achieving WOT.

The 75 assembly should work fine. I have used the cable system and liked it better than the trapeze and they are much more readily available in salvage yards

Thanks, I didn't want to have to pull pedal assembly from one truck and cable from another if I didn't have to.

You can just chuck the trapeze and use a rod from the pedal arm to the carb, Ford even did that later on some models. Also remember when junkyarding that the 6 bangers used a different pedal assembly, IIRC

I put a 77 rod on mine and got rid of the other linkage.

I ditched the sloppy trapeze system and used the rod and ball & stud from a late Dentside. Works great and unclips waay easier than the old style... I put a bend in the rod so it pulls horizontally and clears the linkage

Broken bracket? Weld it back together!

Yes the Dent side cable setup will work, I have used that setup before. The 70 I have now I am running a Dent cable with a CV pedal. I see your located in Mayfield, I'm about half way between Reidland and Sharpe.

I went to the local hardware store and got a piece of metal rod and bent it to fit on my 64's gas pedal and tossed the trapeze setup. Worked great and you can bend it to clear anything if needed. Quick and easy.

HIO and crazed87 - in your linkage set up, is there a return spring in there somewhere that I am not seeing?

Mine has been modified by PO and has a double spring set up. A larger 1/2' diameter spring with a smaller 1/4" spring ran through the middle. Seems my idle doesn't stay consistent and is due to the whole mess that I call my linkage. Looking for something simpler and more reliable.

D&D it's Been a couple years since I did this but if you look you can see 2 springs right beside the carb throttle arm. I did run a return spring just don't have it hooked up when I took the pics. I think I hooked it onto a bracket on the intake possibly used the old trapeze base. If you don't have anything to hook it to make a small bracket that bolts onto the intake manifold or other bolt that's close to being parallel with carb.

Yes, a double spring setup like you have described above. It's screened by the coil.

The return springs need to have a reasonable amount of tension... Overly tight springs will just induce unnecessary wear on the carb's throttle shaft bushings.

EDIT FOR THE OP

... just thinking about the OP's issue more. I believe the broken throttle linkages are a result of the system being improperly adjusted.

The throttle linkage system need to be adjusted at WOT.... meaning, the pedal is on the floor and the carb's throttle plates perfectly vertical... Undershooting results in only part throttle... and over-adjustment results in the linkage pulling against the entire carburetor and not just the carb's throttle shaft.

Update: Got the whole set up from a '77 now have the rod and ball like HIO's. No way for me to weld the broken bracket as it is made of pot......however, I do believe the swap I had done caused to much pressure on misaligned rods (good catch there HIO). I have recently put a new to me 1405 Edelbrock on and now that the blades open all the way it has transformed this ole bump into a credible streeter!

Now that I have moved away this salvage yard only a few minutes from where I used to live went from zero old trucks to having 2 68's and 8 73-79's. New owners go figure....

I would love to know what keeps breaking mine. I'm on #3 since I've owned my truck.

On the weekend I was talking to a hot-rod buddy of mine, and he handed me a cable set up from a mid 80's chev. It looks *way* more durable than the pot-metal bracket that ford used.

Anyone have a picture of the '75 assembly that the OP was mentioning? I would rather put a ford part into my ford...

Are you talking about the gas pedal bracket or from the firewall to the carburetor? Pedal bracket that mounts to the firewall is same as original, the only difference up top is they ditched the trapeze and went direct to carb with one of those rods. I have some threaded rod and a couple of screw on ends that I was going to fab up if I couldn't find the bell bracket that pops on a ball stud.
