I want to finish this thread. Charlie M. I did set my timing using a vacuum gauge. With vacuum advance disconnected, vacuum gauge hooked up to manifold, idle at 550 RPM, I advanced the dizzy to a max vac reading of 20", I am at sea level. Then retarded the dizzy to 19". I am using manifold vacuum for the advance and I have no spark knock at all and the truck really pulls the best ever.
I am not cheap, but I believe in using what I have to work with. As I said previously this carb on the truck is fine and I didn't want to go looking a later carb that would have given me ported vacuum
