F150 HotRod your base antenna was struck by lightning, how much damage
did you suffer. We lost 2 satellite dishes in one month due to indirect
lightning, for some reason this is lightning alley where we live.I would like to get a base and a good antenna but Im afraid the house
would get burned down in a lightning storm, can you set these antennas
away from the house or will you lose signal strength due to the length of the coax cable. Is there any cb books or cb web sites for beginners I was a kid when CB was a hot thing that was 25 plus years
ago for me Thanks
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-02 AT 02:14 AM (EST)]yeah, you can get these things called transi-traps, they install in your co-ax, supposed to work on principle that when lightning smacks into it, it acts like a circuit breaker, funneling off into a groun rod ..in the ground..do they work?..ell, the resident cb man here has one on his set up, and hasn't been hit in 4 years, i didnt have my equipment hit by a bolt, but a good friend did, and lost their house(no ground) i've been hit by lightning indirectly once(dont play elect. guitar in a severe Tstorm) and was moved six feet by some "force" another time..hair raising, indeed!
btw, if you ground you antenna....DO not ground it to your house, lol
i just took my antenna down, my base radio crapped uot awhile back, plus i was tired of worrying about every other *(&^O*&% night when it stormed if we were gonna get smacked by a "big bolt"...(breathes easier, sleeps well when it storms now!)
How come when you buy a CB from a truck stop, it doesn't work more than a month? I have a box of CB radios in the attic, that all lasted a month, after professional fitting and good care. I have a couple of Galaxy converted rigs that I have had for years, and they work great. Got a Uniden in my truck now, bought years ago, with SSB that is great, I do not have it through a burner, but have the output wattage tweaked some. Does fine for me, even in the Rockies.. How many of you guys have SSB on their rigs - I got used to it in Aus, where that was the method of schooling - I was a long way from the schoolhouse. for those of you unfamiliar with the term SSB, it is single sideband, where the modulation is put out on one half of the transitted wave. There are two to play with, Upper and Lower, the most notable attribute being the conversion of plain speech to drunk chipmunk squawk. Fine tuning can resolve it somewhat, but I was taught to read and do math by a inebriated possum I think. I have no clue if it was a guy or a gal, the modulation was so bad.

yeah, for talking long distances or whatnot, ssb is how you'd want to do it.
i had a ranger rg-99 that was a sideband model, it was awesome, but i got bored with it cause it came with all the goodies from the factory, and it was a 10 meter conversion, like the galaxys and mirages and thos kinds i have heard a lot about galaxys falling apart after a coupla years, so i stayed away from, but my dad is a trucker, and his has worked for 4 years now...so i guess they aren't all that bad, as far as truck stop radios go, i wouldnt buy em, you never can tell if some "cb fixer" has been in there, turnin the wrong screws.
I use SSB quite often Theologian it cuts out a lot of the hash and trash that AM has.I'm currently playing around with a tweaked RCI2950 i just picked up so far so good.
I fish the South Pacific, and there is nothing more annoying that trying to call the base station fifteen miles away, but being bled on by mainland guys three thousand miles away, talking about nothing other than how much power they can put out, "Ya'll break-break." Changing channels doesn't help, because they bleed about six channels at a time. From the sound of their voices I imagine most of these guys are shut-ins, down south, not sober, and Arkansas has more than their share of these CB Commandoes.
That's gotta be skip as well as too much power. Next door neighbor used to have one of those rigs. Used his chain link fence as a ground plane. His voice would come through on clock radios that were turned off!!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Aug-02 AT 11:27 AM (EST)]I also run a Uniden President HR2510, I usaully just run it as a CB, but sometimes I turn over to other freqs. and listen to the SSB I am in Kansas and it is not uncommon for me to hear east and west coast talking to each other.
I used to run a 450 heater I sold it, but I would like to get another one but I am unsure where to get one. I am also going to be looking at getting my license so I legally run that kind of power and talk with the others on 11 meter.
A good way to shut somebody up is to stick a straight pin into his coax. As soon as he keys his mike his radio is fried.
A little "truck stop" trick there!
