Seals (Front End)

Hey all, I have a 2002 Ex XLT V10, just started the front end upgrades etc..

The Axel needed seals, but there is one in particular I can't get right, does anyone know which part number goes into this area??

This is where the Axel & Diff meet, inside of that Axel shaft.

I need a part number and a picture of the seal, I have tried so many, I think I will end up taking it to FORD.

The smaller hole needs a Seal, that is a picture of the Axel Shaft.

This is a look of the part Ford sold me, and it still allows a leak.

I don't have a part number for you (but will look), your second pic highlights the outer dust seal (only keeps dirt and muck from getting onside the axle housing tube) the actual inner axle seal that contains the oil to inside the differential is located at the diff. To replace them the carrier needs to be pulled then the seals get pressed in via the open diff case.

EDIT: Take a look at this. http://www.quad4x4.com/ford50excursionaxle.html#axle

Doc, I updated my other post with a link I found that has the seals and the installation kit. The seals you need are the inner axle oil seals.

I had a scare that these internal seals were bad on mine after pulling the shafts out for work. Turns out they filled the axle with fluid while out and it took days to finish dripping out. Apparently mechanics love/hate this issue because it makes them look bad, but sometimes gives them more work. After dripping over the weekend, now it's dry. Have you confirmed they are actually leaking long term? It's not exactly a simple fix if they are bad.

No confirmation he just stated the seals were going bad and it was moisture. It wasn't a leak until he started changing the dust seals, how do I get confirmation?

I haven't seen any leaks but could it be the fluid has leaked out so much??

Like what could happen if the fluid is too low?

The only way to know for sure is to fill the diff and drive it and see. I am told these seals are robust. Before I spent the coin to have the diff basically rebuilt, I would make absolutely certain it needed it.

When I was doing my front end work this summer, I had one side of the axle drooping lower than the other and lube leaked out when the axle shaft was out. I just gave a slight refill and it was fine.

Same here. After replacing the outer seals and pulling the axles, mine has been weeping oil for a while now. I am not overly concerned about it, and to replace it does require the whole differential gear to be removed and replaced. Not cheap or easy. It is easy enough to pull the fill plug and stick your pinkie in there and check the level of the fluid. If it is low, add a little. If it is wayyyyy low, you might need a new seal.

ok, I will check the fluid levels once I take it for an full service oil change.

The inner axel dust seals have been changed by ford, it's now a metal seal vs. rubber. This doesn't prevent anythying except dirt and dust from getting in, they gave me a inner shaft oil seal just in case, but I will fill the diff fluids 1st and see if it's still leaking at all.

it never was, but when I just got this truck the mechanic said the seals were worn and needed replacing, he didn't say they were leaking but I will contact him for clarification. I haven't seen any fluid on the ground since the last check, that could be it being low, and or being sealed good without ANY DUST SEALS...I hope. lol

I'm not a betting man, but I bet you have no leaking inner seal. It would make quite a mess as it runs out and down your lower ball joint, then dripping on your wheels and slung all over your fenderwells. Plus, it stinks like dead fish. I finally got mine all cleaned up.

I thought that too, but the day after he changed the outer seal it was a mess on my driveway.

Yet since it has been back put together I haven't seen any oil on the driveway. Then ford stated the dust seals were optional...and that the dust seals didn't prevent a leak if that was the problem.

We shall see, I won't knwo until I speak to the mechanic to find out "WHY HE WANTED TO CHANGE A SEAL THAT DOESN'T PREVENT OIL FROM LEAKING"

lol this has been a mess, but I wanted this Truck so I have to deal with the bs...luckily I have found my old mechanic that works at a ford dealership. I haven't seen him since I sold my 97 Expedition and bought my 03 Suburban in 2010. He told me to stop dealing with the new guy and bring it to him at the dealership.
