Ok, so I need some help.
Background. 2009 screw f150 lariat touch screen nav.
I recently upgraded to windows 10 on my home pc. So I had to re sign into all my important websites. ie ebay, google, fte.
I was thinking about upgrading my maps since they are version 1.0x
but realized my sync needed updating as well.
The sync website didn't offer me the upgrade 2.1 download.
Instead it instructed me to make an appointment at the dealer for part #
9L2T-14D544-BE
So all my internet investigations lead me to this is a free download. Installed at home with flash drive. But nowhere can I get such download.
First call to the dealer was nice. Sure bring it in they said. Free to do this upgrade they said. About an hour.
Dummy me forgot I had a wedding today so I had to reschedule sync update.
Called dealer yesterday to reschedule.
This guy told me 3 hours to update and $150!
WOW. I voiced my concerns. All indications say this was a 8-10 minute flash drive update
SO questions are
1 Is this update just simply too old and not available online anymore?
2 Has it been replaced by another update?
3 What to do next?
4 Could it simply be that the sync website is not compatible with the new windows 10 because I am using a new version of Microsoft's internet explorer
(Microsoft Edge)
My truck has been at 3 different dealers @ 12 times in the 5 years I've owned it. No mention of this sync update.
I'd like to upgrade/update both sync and maps, but don't really know if both are worth it.
My truck is registered on sync and ford.com
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reason: forgot details for questions
The Sync update should be free, you have to pay for the map update. It's a new SD card chip. So if you didn't mention the maps to one guy, it might have a cost for one but not the other. My hunch is they are charging for the chip and maybe 1/2 labor. You can go to the parts counter and buy the chip and install it yourself. Let them do the Sync update while you're in there. it may only take 10 min to do, but they have to fit it in the schedule and what not and move vehicles around. It all ends up taking longer than it would if you were the only customer there, but rarely works out that way.
Thanks for the reply.
I didn't mention anything about map update to service department. I figured I'd get map update straight from navteq.
That's why I was so confused on time frame 2nd service advisor told me. 2-3 hours for sync update only. He actually wanted me to leave it overnight!

It's frustrating. From the service side, anyone who can leave it over night is easier for them. From the consumer side (which I'm also part of as a car owner), I miss the "good ol days" when there was enough people staffed to treat everyone special. Sure, we're making money in service, but the consumer does want more and more and to pay less and less, even if it doesn't feel like it cost less, there are more and more overhead either consumer or regulation demand. And since we live in a republician democracy laws are technically consumer driven as well.
I understand where you're coming from. I personally have had several bad experences with the service department at almost every dealer I went to in my life. This includes ford, chevy, pontiac and especially mercedes benz. More broken things when I get it back than when I took it in. And as far as leaving overnight. I dropped off this truck to get my rusting cab corners fixed. It was a Saturday and body shop picked it up on Monday. When I went to body shop Monday afternoon it was covered in tree sap. Not a huge deal but body shop had no trees, my house no trees where parked. So where did they park it!
Anyway thanks for letting me know the sync update is indeed free.
I would've just done it at home rather than bothering dealership. Must not be an option anymore
I did the Sync update; it was a free download from Ford that you put on a jump-drive. Stick the jump-drive in the truck and access it via the USB menu. It updated my Sync perfectly; it took probably 15 minutes or so. The final step in the process is to take the jump-drive back to your computer and log back on to your Sync account. You're supposed to upload a file, that the truck placed there, from the jump-drive to the Ford Sync website. I could find the file but not get the upload to work; it does not seem to have affected the update to the truck though. Good luck!

Hi john188971,
Version 2.1 is an update that is only available at the dealer. This update adds the Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist features. It's not unusual for the dealer to charge for this update. Cost can depend on their hourly labor rate.
Thanks for the reply.
Well that makes me more confused. If you google the part number it brings up all kinds of people that have downloaded it. Also the last reply on this thread, he downloaded it. So at one point this was a free download. So what has changed?

john188971,
I believe eriebasin was referring to a different update. According to his profile, he has a 2013 F-150 which has completely different software than your vehicle. Version 2.1 has always been a dealer installed update because it is adding additional features. It's possible that it was covered under warranty for some customers. This update came out a few years ago.
My truck has always had the vehicle health report and 911 crash assist if that helps (pre and post update); nonetheless, it still seems reasonable that any update could be "administered" the same way.
Every so often my truck will ask "would you like to run a vehicle health report " I usually click no. But once I said yes. It dialed a number. I don't remember what the recording said. But if I drive it frequently, like daily. It will do it more often. I don't have anything that says 911 assist anywhere. At least that I'm aware of.
I also forgot to mention that since I purchased my samsung galaxy s5. 1.5 years ago. Text notification and subsequently reading the text has stopped working. When I touch send text the truck says phone doesn't support this function.
Will this update fix this issue?
As for the texting its normally a phone issue. Try googling it specifically for your phone if this doesn't work. There is probably a privacy setting that is blocking bluetooth devices access to messages and notifications. You can try completely deleting the phone from the truck and re-pairing. Just make sure any time it asks permission that you check "don't ask again" and then "ok" or "accept" or whatever. On many phones this step is what establishes permissions and I try that first before looking for specifics on phones and their setting.

john18897,
Shoot me a PM with your VIN; I'll check it out.

Also, for Samsung devices you are required to approve what's called a MAP request to allow SYNC permission to view your messages. You may have seen a similar message requesting permission to allow SYNC to view your contacts, called a PBA request.
To resolve this concern try performing a clean pairing to SYNC then look for the message (on your phone) that says "SYNC is requesting permission to access your text messages. Give SYNC permission?" Once you approve this request, that feature should work.
