Again I turn to my fellow Ford people. I just recently got (as a gift) a grill and brush guard for my 1998 Expy. My problem is that it is a bumper mount guard. I was hoping for a frame mount guard. Please chime in on the pros and cons of the two different types. Are bumper mounts only for looks? Or will it help incase I bump bambi on the way skiing? Do I keep it or e-bay it?
It might do for going through light brush, but unless you anticipate installing a winch on a 4X4, it will probably do for looks. We technicians LOVE to work twice as hard to work in the engine compartment with lovely additions like that.. :P
Never tought about you Tech's dealing with brush and bull guards...
Well, I guess that's why you get billed an additional hour (labor) when you get your truck serviced! ;-)
I never thought about the fact that it would be harder for you to work on the engine. Are the bumpers on the Expy's pretty solid? I mean, will it be an issue to have a heavy grill guard mounted to it?
At a minimum it should mount to the bumper brackets, not directly to the bumper itself. That bumper cover is prolly 800.00 and you wouldnt want to damage it, or the inner pad.
It mounts to the chrome bumper. It would require holes drilled into the bumper. The cover is not even touched. Is the chrome bumper sturdy enough for this?
The Manik Brush guard took 6 bolts to the frame, and doesn't bother me getting to the engine. I call it "The Deer Catcher" for the wife. Makes more since to pay $400 for the brush guard, than $700 for a new hood, $600 for a new front end, and $200 a month for insurance.
Sorry for the big picture, but it's the only one I got!
