Sounds like a very bad piston slap when I give it gas as its cruising down a hill on the freeway. Or in neutral as I let off but ease back on as its winding down.
Horrible! I can't drive it. I have to gun it so I don't hear the sound. Not much power either.
I notice ford has re-manufacture 5.8l for 2500$ delivered to local ford dealer. Hear it's a pain but guy could do it in a week?
Unless experience other issues with the engine, and/or, considerable number of miles on the engine, then suggest try and isolate the problem to a particular cylinder(s). Run the engine @ idle, listen at each cylinder using a hose. Suggest then remove valve covers and look for anything obvious, particular if narrow it down to particular cylinder(s). Lastly, pull the plugs and check for compression.
Had similar issue, almost sold the truck to the tow truck driver on the way home. Started the engine, used the hose, isolated the cylinder and found a lifter collapsed, purchased cam and lifter set for lot less that replacing the engine. Anyhow, food for thought?
Isolated it to passenger rear cylinder area. I did use Lucas oil treatment for a while and think it made it worse. Hear bad for lifters. Will consider doing what you did.
If the noise is in the rear cylinders, then it's a good bet it's got one or more spun rod bearings. The #4 and 8 rods are the last in line to receive oil from the pump. And if it wasn't given regular oil and filter changes, that's a death sentence for those two rod bearings. The van engines have to come out from the front, after removing the radiator, grill and support beam. Not an easy job but might be done in a week's time, depending on the people and their skill level.
