Do you ever have that feeling...

...that you have overlooked something. I winterized our 5er a few days ago by blowing out the lines, bypassing the HW heater and fresh water tank (it has a built in bypass system) then sucking up some of the usual 'pink stuff' through the Winterize' hose bib by using the on board water pump. Historically I've used about 1.5 gallons on whatever RV we own at the time. This year, less then a gallon including some for the traps. All of the faucets including the regular shower and outside shower spigots run pink . What am I missing --- or aren't?

Dave,

I can't say that you missed anything, not being there, but I have never used less than a gallon on anything I have winterized. You did open the bypass when you closed the in and out to the water heater?

Steve - on this 5er there is a single valve lever shut off to the HW heater then a separate 'Winterize' hose bib that somehow goes to the pump, supposedly doing the bypassing. I have the backside of that panel off to look at the black tank and really haven't traced out the confusion of lines, valve and fittings but it worked last year ... or at least nothing froze/broke any lines and it was dang cold.

But I still wonder

Well if it works, it works. Are you sure you just didn't winter in the keys last year?

I do not displace that feeling... more times than not.. it is correct...

you missed something or made a mistake doing it..

worse case.. re-due the winterization.

I am fairly new to RV type of camping... but I was an auto mechanic for 43 years.... IF I got that feeling after a big job... I recheck everything. and usually found something missing or wrong...

If it was the same thing last year as now, probably safe, but I sure can't figure out how they ran the lines so short.

Steve - Lots of PEX tubing and fittings - if I can get into the 5ers basement I'll try to get a photo. Unfortunately I opened the hatches and inserted 'stuff' the night before Halloween to get my truck in the garage so it's kind of (really!!) a mess.
Keys - yep, that's where we went - in our dreams.

Chuck - I've already done my re-re-recheck of everything and will do it one more time before the cover goes on and it's backed into its winter parking pad. I too worked many years as a mech either for money or fun and really had a problem when I had parts left that were not supposed to be on my bench.

Only thing I can think of is the low point drains...but that doesn't matter if you ran pink in all the faucets and toilet and shower.

Don't think I saw it but did you drain the HW heater? Just pull the plug and drain it?

On edit...I use just under two gallons...but I have two bathrooms.

This thread is the reason I use a checklist and complete the list in order by checking each item when completed.

Yep - pulled that HW heater plug first along with opening the pressure relief valve to drain it faster. I also drained the fresh water tank that we only keep a few gallons in while traveling. We have an unused washer hookup and those valves were opened as well to help things drain too.

I believe the only major thing left is to check the battery water level and install a full isolation switch as the one supplied by the OEM leaves a couple things on and this spring the dealer supplied too small battery was $120 d-e-a-d.

My guess - I'm paranoid that I forgotten something and it will take me way more hours then I want to spend on repairs when we could be out traveling

I always have in the past up until last year but decided my age induced aching back just didn't need any more abuse. If this one dies, then I might just have to suffer through it again.

I just put a battery tender in the battery box and run an extension cord to it. Much easier than pulling batterys. Don't forget to open the disc. sw.

Unfortunately any extension cord would run over the access to my back yard and the tractor mounted snow blower - and hundred foot 12-2 cords, I found a few years back, have gotten way too expensive with either being eaten by that blower or @#$% mice/chipmunks. The battery, as I noted above, will have a new Marinco 701 (Contour Battery Master Switch | Marinco) total disconnect/isolation switch instead of the existing one that leaves the propane detector and a couple other items still powered on to kill the battery
