She is a 1999 7.3 T,with 210000 miles. Runs great BUT I'm using oil. Very little oil smoke in the exhaust. Looks about the same as it has been forever ? Can see some oil film on intake/outlet turbo hose's ?
I'm thinking its the turbo seal ? Did a pull with my tractor of about 200 miles round trip. Trailer is about 10,000 #. Used about 1 1/2 Qt's. Good power and no blue smoke that I could see.
So is it time to R&R the seal's or replace turbo ?
I'm new to diesel but have been taking care of it for the last 10 years.
If you dont have excessive blow by it might just be your injector o rings a turbo rebuild is not hard at all, plenty of threads about rebuilding good luck
Agreed. Injector o-rings would be at the top of the list if you don't see an excessive leak anywhere, especially if the o-rings have never been changed.
What did/does your fuel filter look like when changed?
As long as the valve cover bolts weren't severely over-torqued, you should be able to reuse them.
Did you replace o-rings on the injectors when you did the heads?
It won't hurt to do the o-rings on the turbo.
Did you replace the glow plugs when you did the heads? If not, it takes about an hour extra if you are doing o-rings and costs about $100. Use only Ford OEM for both o-rings and glow plugs.
I have looked and I cannot find a factory recommended torque spec. So, hand tighten until the seal makes contact and gets snug, then go 1/8-1/4 additional turn and test for leaks.
