I need help! ICP IPR CPS FUELPUMP?

Here is my symptom. Seems to run fine most of the time. Occasionaly at stop light the engine will surge, hiccup and sometimes stall. No problems at WOT other than my injectors making their knocking noise 150000 plus. The sypmtom seems to happen more after making a stop at store (warmed up) then while leaving it will surge , sputter. If I give it throttle, seems to keep it from stalling. Once it happened while backing up. Seems to fine while driving at normal RPMs, just when idleing or near taking off.

I have brand new CPS grey from Clay in. I have relatively new ICP in with dielectric grease just on pins and on rubber seal in (new pig tail also with soldered wires). In last year I have put new glow plugs in, and 50 cent spacers in. I have checked the pins on the valve covers, seem fine. I have a rebuild kit from Clay for the IPR but am hesitant to do it if it is not the problem(only fix if broken).
I need the help from the EXPERTS here that have really helped me in the past.
Any ideas?

Copying myself from a recent thread:

"IPR: When the IPR starts to fail, it gets hot. Take a can of air with you when you drive. If the symptoms show up, invert the can and spray right on the IPR coil... this super-cools the IPR coil with freeze spray."

It does not sound like a fuel delivery issue to me.

Try the air as Rich mentioned above, and if that does not get you anywhere, I would change the CPS.

Thanks, if it were consistent, it would be easier to try the freeze spray. It is very intermitent, once a week or so, happens for a few seconds and then is done for another week or so. Just want to get to bottom of it before I have to call tow truck on side of road. The CPS is one month old. I thought that was causing problem, apparently not. Seems to happen more on a rainy day ??? But it is not a requirement. I could spray it, but would not know if helps or not due to the intermittent symptom.

CPS sensors have been known to fail in less than one month. If you have a spare, you might want to try swapping it out just for grins and giggles.

Rainy day... while using intermittent wipers? That's a known problem with grounds for the wiper motor/PCM. Work around is to turn the switch right past the intermittent setting to full time wipers.

Otherwise I'd guess sticking IPR. They can be cleaned and the o rings replaced.

Was the new ICP sensor from Ford or aftermarket? Does the stumble happen in the same locations? I ask because el cheapo fleabay ICPs can be flustered by strong RF signals like a radio tower.

Thanks, it happens without the wipers on. Usually happens after has warmed up good and then restarted after sitting. I have three CPS in glove box, one new from Clay, one new grey from dealer, one old grey (replaced). The one in truck is new one from clay ... Dark dark blue?? I will switch it out again just to make sure. THE ICP is oem from dealer, I removed all insulation from pigtail to make sure is in good condition, looks fine still, did the wiggle test, can't seem to get symptom to occur when I want it to. I have the rebuild kit for IPR from clay, I will probably remove and clean and replace Orings and nut today. Can CPS cause a surge? Sometimes the SURGE is very significant, like from 700/800 up to 1500 rpm. I didn't think false reading from CPS would cause it to rev. I really need to get an AE or other tool to get readings. I know it is hard for you guys to pinpoint without numbers. I would be better at writing the software to read the ODB, than interpreting what I'm reading.

A false reading from the ICP sensor causes all kinds of misery. If the PCM thinks the ICP is higher/lower than it really is - it adjusts the IPR to get the ICP the PCM wants. ICP is the ballgame on our trucks. Dodge (and everybody else) worries about fuel pressure, our oil powered injectors deliver fuel by way of Injector Control Pressure (High Pressure Oil commanded by the IPR).

the Injector Pressure Regulator (IPR) is a key player in the fueling of the engine - and surge is a natural reaction to a problem with the HPOP/ICP/IPR ball team.

Thanks Tugly, I will doctor my IPR this afternoon. I feel my ICP is good (still shiny new) no oil in connector, etc. For HPOP, I like to assume it is not this because my wallet wants to run and hide. I'm going to search for good write up on IPR clean/rebuild and any other tests I can do for the coil, any advice or links will be greatly appreciated.

After researching this library of knowledge. I've just purchased a new IPR from Clay @ Riffraff. I will rebuild my old one and stuff in glove box with all the other parts and tools and stuff. I will follow up once installed with success or failure. Got to stop the SURGE before I run over one of these tiny cars in front of me :-)

I also forgot one of my other symptoms, back when weather was hot, it wanted to stall (sometimes did) stopping at stop sign at bottom of hill. Not sure if same problem or even related.

There is no guarantee the IPR is the solution. It would be most helpful if we had readings from the sensors in your truck. Do you have a smart phone or tablet?
