If the O-rings become worn or damaged, this will cause the injector to vibrate and cause the retainer clips to crack up into pieces. This metal debris will find its way back to the return side of the oil pump (gerotor) gears and housing.
There is no way the O rings are designed to keep the injector from moving, they are a seal, period.

If this happens, it will damage the gears, housing, crankcase cover, oil cooler, oil filter housing, and high pressure oil pump. The engine will stall and fail to restart. You will not show any signs of base oil pressure, which would in turn mean no high pressure to the injectors.
This will all cost somewhere between $5000 to $6000 to fix. So yes, if you have the time and patience, I would definitely change them out.
I could see that happening but i think it would be the hp oil rail nozzel causing the "vibration". Also it shouldnt be an issue scense the OP didnt have an oring failure. It was done as a previnative measure. I also have never had one fail on me. I have changed them all out because it was already opened up for injector swaps but i could see it. Thats alot of pressure and force from the high pressure oil
Not sure how that would be possible. The c clip is ina small groove. It wont move up or down no matter what. The oem clip is damn near impossible to remove with tools. Now, once the o ring is removed, the spacer between the oring and the c clip will travel up and down. Maybe that could break but by then, it probably wouldnt start anyway for lack of oil pressure. The biggest problem i found was the tiny zip ties on the injector wires. Specifically the one closest to the injector. 3 of my eight were broken and only part of it was left on the injector prior to me touching them. I suspect Ill be have a clogged or broken IPR screen in my future.
The issue that bstidham was talking about is when the top seal blows out or becomes soo worn down from a leaking nipple cup seal the beveled washer starts to pulse or "vibrate" with the HPOP. They will in fact shatter from this high frequency pulse. My Low Pressure Oil Pump actually had a perfect impression of the washer piece I couldn't find on every single tooth of the gear pump. (it pressed in there like those machines that squish pennies LOL). I've had the washers shatter multiple times and have fixed this issue in many trucks.
That is why we developed the Bulletproof Nipple Cups over at HHC Diesel. One time lifetime warranty fix that won't leave you stranded.
That makes scense..... So as long as you stay on top of the top seals and rail orings you should be good. Thanks for the clarification that makes scenes
Thanks for helping with some clearity about my response!

The exact same thing happened to my trucks oil pump gears and housing. Purchased my truck with no apparent troubles. Vehicle failed to start after having it two days. Recognized gauge showing no base oil pressure during cranking. Took it to shop and we found impressions on the gears, We found metal debris of a retainer clip in the oil pump housing area of the crankcase cover, oil cooler and filter housing. It appeared that someone had previously repaired a damaged retainer in one injector and didn't bother to locate and remove all the possible debris that was being distributed throughout the engine's oil system.
Makes sense. Im in a pickle right now. While hooking up the injectors to their respective plugs, one of the clips poped off and is missing. Lesson learned....put the valve covers back on before hooking up the injectors.
Ahhh man i have done the same thing but cover was on. I never did find it untell i pulled the intake long after. It was laying under the egr cooler and there were actually a couple of them in there

I know this was asked earlier about if just the top inner seal was sold independent of a complete kit. I ran across this:

No clue on the quality of the part...
