At the risk of looking dumb I'm going to ask anyway. I googled and couldn't find a clear answer.
Is there a replacement automatic transmission that is higher than 3 speed with overdrive? Like 4 or 5 speed that would fit? Maybe even 6 speed? If so does anyone have one and could post links please. I am just curious in case I have to replace mine I would prefer more gears.
Some of the guys on here have the Gear Vendors overdrive units- they're tough and work well.
ok I looked them up and it's roughly $3100 for a 5 speed automatic. Thanks for the info. I am still not certain what , if anything, is wrong with the truck but I want options for just in case.

Did you check under the 4x4 section? And it was over $3k (ouch).

The automatic in your 1999 *IS* a four speed automatic. It's ratios are:
2.71:1
1.54:1
1:1
0.71:1
There is a six speed ZF manual trans that came in these trucks. You could get all the parts and install one. Several people here have done it.
