What year did they start putting 5 speed trannys in F-150's?? I am looking for a 300 six truck to trade my 351 for, and I was looking for an auto, the only one I found was a rough truck with a C6. I would like to have an overdrive tranny otherwise it won't be any better than my 351 E4OD. I found a real clean 89 it said 5 speed work truck on the window, I looked at the shifter and it was chrome with no numbers. People often refer to a standard transmission as a 4 or 5 speeds in my area, since there are no numbers I thought they might have assumed it is a 5 speed and not a 4 speed granny gear. I guess I will just have to go drive it, put it in the 5th gear position if it goes backwards it's a 4 speed and if it dies it's a 5 speed.
According to the info I have, Ford had both a four speed manual and a four speed manual with overdrive transmission available for the first time in 1978 on the F150. I don't know if a "four speed manual with overdrive" is what we now call a 5-speed but the effect would be the same for what you want. An '89 F150 would have had an overdrive manual as an option IMHO.
BTW: in 1978 the base engine in the F150 was the 300 six @ 101hp and 223 ft lbs of torque.

Im not sure about that. In 1988 the 4 speed with granny gear unit was replaced with the M5OD (Manual 5 speed with overdrive, 5th being overdrive.) I do know that there are a select few early to mid 90's Fords with the ol granny gear 4 speed, but it is very rare.
The 4 speed was available through 1993. 5 speed was 1988-up. The old overdrive transmission was only 4 speeds. I think 1986 was the last year it was available in pickups.
But I think that the "old overdrive transmission was only 4 speeds" was availible into the late 80's b/c I drove a 88' 150 4x2 with one in it, but thats not to say that it was the original tranny.
