Anyone else have problems with there trandfer case? I have a 97 F-150 and I have had the case out 2 times, the pump on the shaft for the fluid to lube it locks up and spins on the shaft.
this last time the planet gear have gone out and I could not afford the so I had to take out the ring for them.
this removed 4 wheel low range
It works fine but now I can hear the gear clicking at low speed and I think that soon they may come loose inside the case and that would be a very bad thing.
I've seen very few problems with these transfer cases but the ones I've seen that did have problems were pretty much destroyed. I think that what killed them was water getting into them.
hmmm that might be the problem
Next time you're in water that deep make sure you check the oil afterwards. I've seen water float all the oil out. Water doesnt lubricate very well
I have 97 250 LD and blew apart my transfer case. I was just driving on the highway and BANG! The casing broke in two. Truck has 145K on it and I plow snow with it. The junkyard where I got a used one said they are a pretty common item to go bad. Also broke the cone shape piece that goes between the trans and transfer case for an extra $125.
TEEJAY
The part that blew up on you was the "extension housing" I know because mine blew up as well. The reason for it was the yoke was not getting lubed properly causing it to heat up then expand and then bang. Take your driveshaft out with the yoke and lube the splines with "ford teflon grease" that should fix it.
